A state of emergency has been declared by the country’s president in an effort to help the army battle the fires. At least one person has been injured in the fire that swept more than 2.5 million square meters (660 acres), according to Chile's National Emergency Office (ONEMI).
500 houses in 6 hours averages to about 1 house per minute. Jesus.
I live in valparaiso, there's 11 people dead. This is awful. [editline]13th April 2014[/editline] It smells like smoke everywere
You might want to update the title, OP. It's up to about 2000 homes consumed by the flames and roughly 11000 homeless people. 15 dead have been found, let's hope there's no more than that. It's a total shitstorm. I went there myself in the morning to help out and there was just this HUGE area that was black/brown. There was rubble everywhere. The fires were still raging behind a hill and I counted at least 6 helicopters in the air at any one time, just going over the hill to drop water and back to base over and over.
Wildfires and firestorms in general are horrifying, nobody deserves to ever experience one in their lifetime, and it's definitely not a requirement or should ever be on someones bucket list. A tsunami of flame sweeping towards your home is the stuff of nightmares, and I should know. Here's a video from my deck right before I had to evacuate with my family.
