Hello, everyone. I'm Masaya Kobayashi of NAMCO BANDAI Studios. I'm so honored to be able to join the Smash Bros. team--that globally popular series of which Japan is particularly proud—and to work alongside of Mr. Sakurai.

We will fully utilize our experience and knowledge in action/fighting game development, technical capability, and organizational strength, and we hereby promise you that we will develop the best and most powerful "Super Smash Bros." title ever!
Hello, I'm Masahiro Sakurai, the director of the Super Smash Bros. series.
It's my personal belief that the only time a creative product really resonates is in that first moment when it's actually in front of you.
With that said, I've realized that if we keep the new Super Smash Bros. title's development structure secret, it'll only create more and more speculation, and I won't be able to develop the game with any freedom. That's why I've decided to announce this news right now, even though it's still very early on.
I would love to provide more information, but for now, I'm going to stay quiet until I have something solid to show you.
The project has just gotten started. Bear in mind that not only are we developing two titles simultaneously, but we announced the project before we even started actual development, so I'm afraid we will likely have to keep you waiting for quite a while. Please be patient.
Currently, the prototype prepared by NAMCO BANDAI Games and NAMCO BANDAI Studios' special team looks pretty good, and it's working great. In order to take advantage of the fact that there will be versions for two different systems, and to maximize and offer fun new gameplay elements, the entire team is going to work hard together. Thank you.

HOLY FUCK
Although I stopped playing Super Smash Bros. ever since I really got into PC Gaming and just generally got older (not saying the games are for kids, mind you), this is really great news. I hope they'll make a fucking great one.
If they just make a SSBM 2, I'm fine. Anything like Brawl would be better than nothing but I want a competitive game again.
im jizzing
Well that successfully got me hyped up. Almost makes me want to invest in the new system.
"In order to take advantage of the fact that there will be versions for two different systems.."
Wait, WHAT?
3D Pacman's definitely gonna be in this, especially after this announcement.

Holy shit, triple ninja'd.
ninja fest
I'm going to get the Wii U when it comes out, i'm not a fan boy or anything.. I just have the money, and shit why not? I have nothing to spend my money on besides an iPhone 5.. Better yet, I hope it comes during Christmas so my parents can get it.
I am also hyped it's going to be on the 3DS. I'm glad good games are coming to it finally. Such as Luigi's Mansion 2 and Paper Mario 4.

The vita kind of got shot into the dirt by Sony, so the 3DS is doing fine, but a new smash bros will just further increase its huge sales lead.
Funny, I just started playing Brawl again recently.
Let the "X confirmed for Smash Bros. Wii U" posts commence.
Starting with
Nightmare confirmed for Smash Wii U

Wii U and 3DS.
Amazing. Was this posted somewhere in the OP? I feel kind of stupid, but I didn't see it after reading it a second time.

I don't see the 3DS failing anytime soon. If you release a really good game every 2 months or so
"Ridge Racer" series
Is it just me, or are they trying to force Ridge Racer into everything

Since E3 last year it was confirmed.

Smash Bros. wasn't meant to be competitive. SSBM just had some unintended bugs that were used as "strategies" that made it that way.
'sides, competitive players ruin the Smash Bros. games. "hrur durr use metaknight he's S tier btw you can only play on one stage and no items at all"

Well it was confirmed at the Wii U reveal (E3 of last year) by Reggie that the next Smash Brothers would be for both consoles.

I don't care about tiers and am not super into the competitive aspect of it, but my friends and I all agree that Brawl sucked as a game you can play seriously. Why make a game have you trip randomly? It also felt way too floaty, I'm not saying it was bad but compaired to the other two it wasn't as good. SSB and Melee felt great to play while Brawl was just off. Is it bad that I want a game that can be both fun and competitive (like Melee was). What's so bad about having it tuned more like the previous game?
[editline]22nd June 2012[/editline]
Also, why do you feel like the way others play has to effect you? My friends and I don't limit ourselves with characters, we just find items fun to put on if we want to play less seriously. That doesn't mean that we can't have fun while the items are off.
I had a "competitive, tournament" player almost ruin Brawl for me forever. Half of his "strategy" was spamming Falco's down-throw. Fuck that.
I enjoy the hell out of Brawl. Just keep improving on the formula and you've got a sale from me.
I want melee physics back
brawl was so slow
I like the faster paced fights of melee
[editline]22nd June 2012[/editline]
I'm not a competitive player I just think that melee had the best flow if that makes any sense

Yeah, we should change the party-fighting game series to be more serious, boring, and straight.

This I do agree with, though.
I'd prefer something inbetween, though.
I liked Brawl, but it didn't keep me coming back nearly as long as Melee did. Which is the one problem I have when it comes to looking forward to this game. I can't see it being too different from Brawl, but I will still get it and I'll still play it because I love it either way.
They better be working on Mario's overalls, we need more detail in them
I hope they add in the Mii as an unlockable character :v:
I don't understand the hate for competitive Smash. The majority of competitive players don't force their rules onto anyone, and honestly it's normally the other way around. Go to any news post for the mod called "Project M" and you'll see people in a constant circle-jerk about how competitive smash "ruins SSB". Play the game how you want to play it, ffs.
Most smash players just want a game that can be both competitively viable and fun for dicking around... Aka SSBM. I don't see a problem with that.
... As for the actual topic, I guess I'm glad. I just hope if they do a story, they do it a lot better this time around. SSE was good, but it felt very flat and boring. You could tell that Sakurai was working on Kid Icarus after Brawl too, just because of the massive spotlight Pit got in the story.
I'm not going to say that the next smash game needs to be ~super serious~ but if they could at least put the level of effort in that they did on melee...
...and remove fucking stumbling
who even thought that was a good idea?

It'd be cool if they did something like for what they did with Mario Kart Wii. Make it so that you can customize the weight-type of the character, maybe make it so that the game has 2-3 different weight/movement types of Mii's, and your character's belly size will determine which one it uses.
