The Fast-food chain KFC has been ordered to pay $8 million dollars in damages to the family of an Australian girl who was left severely brain damaged and wheelchair-bound after being poisoned by a chicken meal.
In 2005, Monika Samaan, then aged seven, her parents and her brother were hospitalised with salmonella poisoning after eating a "Twister" chicken wrap at a KFC restaurant near Sydney.
Last week, a Supreme Court judge ruled in favour of the family, saying KFC had breached its duty of care to the girl.
The family's lawyer George Vlahakis, spoke to media outside the court.
KFC said it was a tragic case but that it is "deeply disappointed and surprised by the decision." The company is planning to appeal.

Because its not our fault we sold contaminated meat, its the family's fault for buying it

It's because the family should have gone after the company that provided KFC the contaminated meat.
KFC is gross anyway.
The last time I had KFC I was shitting for the whole weekend, their food is fucking grotty but delicious
man i want some kfc now
I was expecting one of those dumb lawsuits against food companies (for instance: The lady who got burned by coffee). The decision seems fair.
How in the hell does Salmonella give you brain damage AND cripples you?

Probably by not being Salmonella poisoning...?
Subway, eat fresh.
KFC has some kickass Mash and Gravy
Other than that, I prefer Whataburger

most irrelevant post 2012
It's because the family should have gone after the company that provided KFC the contaminated meat.
because the family totally knows what company that is
I say KFC sues whatever company to pay the damages to this family FOR them. Because if it was KFC that contaminated it then the most this kid would have gotten was a bad flu.
The organism enters through the digestive tract and must be ingested in large numbers to cause disease in healthy adults. That's how.
never eating KFC again
Oh good, I had KFC for dinner today.

KFC should have checked it more throughly

Why do people always bring up the lady who got burned by coffee as a dumb lawsuit? The whole thing about that was the coffee was sold at a temperature way higher than industry standards so mcdonalds could save money and she ended up getting 3rd degree burns from it.
Beverages should not be sold at a temperature capable of destroying your flesh on contact so badly that you end up requiring skin grafts.

that coffee one was completely fair, its mcdonalds fault that they were disregarding regulations and brewing their coffee FAR too hot
KFC in Asia isn't like the American counterparts. KFC is almost regarded like a sit-down restaurant instead of a fast food there, serving rice and different styles of chicken recipe. How about the badass roast corn on a cob and lotsa steam veggies
Anyway, it still doesn't detract from the fact it's unhealthy as stuff. I wouldn't eat it everyday, but once every few months perhaps. I would buy chicken then buy some Chinese fried rice next door to the KFC nearby. Was good, heartburn worth it
It's not the supplier of the chickens fault, it just wasn't cooked properly. salmonella can be present in chicken you buy anywhere...

I think it's because (and I'm sorry for stereotyping) Australians tend to be much less sue happy than Americans. They actually sue for real reasons most of the time.

It's not actually that hard to look it up. KFC here(Australia) had a few advertisements that showed which company provides them with their chicken.
KFC should have checked it more throughly
I guess they could taste sample every order but I think that would only make customers angry.
Thought this was going to be a stupid greed case over someone getting fat and unhealthy from KFC or burning themselves. I'm thoroughly surprised though, since this is actually reasonable.
Welcome to Australia, even our KFC will give you brain damage.
Fuck, imagine that happening to you. Your dinner one night completely changes your life. How insane.
