Swedish media is reporting 159 dead so far and expecting for it to rise above 200. Kind of scary since just this week I took this small fire safety course at Uni (since I'm a part of a group that holds lan parties and another that holds the bar sometimes.) and we saw this video of a club in the US that caught fire in 2003 and 100 people died in 6 minutes. Was quite brutal and the fire started the exact same way as it did here. The stage's isolation caught fire from the pyrotechnics.
Jesus. Surviving that would give you nightmares for the rest of your life, assuming you weren't out the door straight away.
Dammit, fire and party pun block. On another note, terrible thing to happen
Dammit, fire and party pun block.
disco inferno? seriously though, that's horrible i can't even being to imagine how terrible this must have been
it's The Station Fire all over again. It started the exact same way, too.
Now that I think about it, a fire in a really big nightclub probably is going to have a high death count, everyones drunk, poor lighting, a lot of people crammed into a very small space. Pretty big fire hazard.
The footage I've seen from nightclub fires is enough for a lifetime. A burning pile of bodies up to the top of the doorway because when people fell, others climbed over. Only about a third were dead...
Fuuuck.... I can't imagine being in one of those without scaring the shit out of myself... A rave(ish)/club atmosphere turns into screams, the smell of burning corpses, and thousands of people clawing and crowding into eachother to escape.
the numbers seem to have risen to 240 from what i've seen here, but it isn't confirmed yet.
Our media says 245 people died : http://g1.globo.com/rs/rio-grande-do-sul/noticia/2013/01/numero-de-mortes-em-incendio-de-boate-ja-chega-245-diz-policia.html (it's in portuguese obviusly) edit: The article also says there may be more, but actually they know that 245 died.
I live in Santa Maria, where this happened. Fortunately, my friends and family are alright. According to local radio there may be over 400 dead.
Also, people are saying the nightclub manager closed the door and asked people to pay for their drinks before leaving. No idea if this is true or not but I don't doubt it. [editline]27th January 2013[/editline] It was a flare according to local news.
That's exactly why he (supposedly) closed the door, he saw there were already people leaving
it's not true because lots of people managed to leave the club before dying of asphyxia
Well you don't keep doors closed easily when you've got 2000 people rushing towards it in total chaos.
another source says the band playing was using fire effects on stage and it caught on fire
na that happens in the famous one that was videod from the beginning, thats a insane watch by the way people just trample the shit out of each other and get stuck in the doorway as they slowly get burned and you can just hear screaming coming out of the inferno that used to be the club, its like peering into hell.
its very likely not true also [t]http://media.tumblr.com/64a759934351ce3588b1ed2f31a08edc/tumblr_inline_mhaa1cWIvz1qz4rgp.png[/t] "may it serve as a lesson lets see who goes to clubs now to enjoy and show themselves off and i hope the number of dead people grows to serve as an example i dont feel any pity you know because in places like that much worse things happen" "people that go to a shithole like that, they run that risk. saying im sorry would be too much from me. i think those people will dance somewhere else, where the demon accepts them with open arms. there'll be pyrotechnics for them to watch for a loooong time there" "in a place where only bad things happen i say it's good riddance they couldnt be in their homes resting for work instead of being on debauchery what i think is that it wasnt enough" christian site for news
"Yeah all these humans are the demon work! I hope they all die, fuck these motherfuckers! I'm totally going to heaven, I'm such a good person."
it was some site where they take pics of christian comments someone said it was from a christian news site and i believed it :suicide:
well it happens :v:
There's that too. But most people escaped only when firemen demolished a wall anyway.

BBC says 245 as well, the OP just hasn't been updated
I live there, but I'm in vacation in another city. My condolences to all the families. I hope there's no one that I know of..
Man, I remember the media talk on the Cromañon nightclub fire back from 2004. To this day it still gets yearly attention on memorial days, and whenever there's talk about jailing the fuckers who thought closing the fire exits with chains and locks was a good idea. 194 dead. 1432 injured. The problem here is that people freak the fuck out instead of reacting to a situation like that calmly, and even if only ten people do initially that expands outwards, people who see people freaking out but not the reason also freak out. If everyone could have remained calm I bet there would have been a few injuries at most, but that's just not possible. I bet there was a problem/lack of regulation here, just like back in '04, though. A fire exit being blocked, nobody being there to properly operate the fire extinguishers, or something. Buildings are designed to be safe, it's the fault of whoever doesn't follow regulations that shit like this happens. Back then the main problems were a blocked fire exit and the club being at four times it's capacity. [editline]27th January 2013[/editline]
a source says someone lit a flare inside the club how stupid do you even have to be
Shit, really? That was the source of this fire I'm talking about, too. Someone lit a flare, and the entire ceiling caught fire (it was covered in plastic fabric and polyurethane)
an example of what a nightclub fire is like
Also, the main cause of the deaths is that the Security staff were ordered to not let anyone out of the nightclub until they paid their checks. The nightclub also has only one entrance, which happens to be the only exit as well. Last year an university student sued the nightclub for not letting her out of it because she lost her check. She couldn't leave until the nightclub was closed. The nightclub had to pay over R$ 20.000, plus the moral damage they caused to her.
checks?
checks?
Yes, the bills. For buying drinks and stuff like that.
oh right, over here you just pay for your drink before you get it
an example of what a nightclub fire is like
Oh my god I couldn't handle being so closed up in a room of people, let alone running away from fire
