By now you may have heard the news that we have made the difficult decision to discontinue production of Disney Infinity. From the beginning, Disney Infinity was built for you—our fans—and I wanted to take a moment to thank you not just for your support over the years, but for creating a community that made Disney Infinity more than just a game.
Long live LEGO Dimensions.
Infinity was fine, they just expected way too much out of it.
Instead of making a sandbox game you could plug and play and drag and drop they tried to make a social hub where you drank the koolaid under the guise of playing a game.
Disney Interactive really doesn't have a clue what makes a game world work. They always hire lots of people for the grunt positions and then some marketing major with a sub in programming as their director, and invariably shit goes tits up.
Maybe they should start hiring game designers first and then social media majors for after market and lesser positions, maybe they'd start making money and games after that.
Tbh Amiibo pretty much Blitz Krieg'd that entire market
Personally, I think the whole toys-to-life thing was a gimmick. A smart gimmick. But just a gimmick.
and I guess they ran out of properties to use even though they could also use Indiana Jones.
and actually properly use the 90's disney cartoons
You know what, this is going to sound odd but I kind of like the idea of things like Disney Infinity and what not. The idea of a physical addition to the game that children can play with away from the machine; they've saved the world on the game now they can save the world in either own little adventure!
As a kid I would have loved that! Problem is well, first off the toys themselves don't look to... well, playful, they look too solid and stiff and are too expensive because of the built in components to make them work with their devises.
If there was a world where you could get them in like the capsule machines in supermarkets and arcades at like £1 a piece that would be great or if they were more durable and playable then that too would be great!
Like a Transformers game where you have the toy which you can play with just as easily in life as in the game, all be it less spectacular!
Sadly it seems like they are all just like expensive swipe cards to unlock your game and have little function outside of it.

Apparently they're just gonna license their shit out instead of actually producing anything, a la Star Wars. Not gonna lie, that's way more interesting than whatever the hell those execs want out of this business.
and actually properly use the 90's disney cartoons
Yeah I'm sure kids of today know all the 90s cartoons.
Well Marvel and Star Wars didn't save the game.
At least they tried?
Ouch, right in the stock value
well
ouch tomorrow
i don't believe infinity underpreforming is the sole reason they're cutting disney infinity, there's been talks of big budget cuts happening due to Shanghai disneyland, and this feels like it lines up with that.
Does this mean a not shit publisher can start work on some real, non-mobile marvel games now?
[editline]10th May 2016[/editline]
Wait, would they give EA the rights since they're doing SW?
I think Activision still has Spidey
I thought Infinity was making them mad cash because of all those little figurines.
I think this means Star Wars will finally come to Lego Dimensions.
I thought Infinity was making them mad cash because of all those little figurines.
Amiibos stole that market so hard.
so is all that kingdom hearts shit gonna keep going or is it safe to go on facebook and re-add the creepy kids from school again
The actual important part
After a thorough evaluation, we have modified our approach to console gaming and will transition exclusively to a licensing model
http://venturebeat.com/2016/05/10/the-disney-infinity-franchise-is-over-as-entertainment-company-pulls-out-of-console-games/
So Disney aren't completely give up, they'll just be getting other publishers to make their games
so is all that kingdom hearts shit gonna keep going or is it safe to go on facebook and re-add the creepy kids from school again
That's Square.
Tbh Amiibo pretty much Blitz Krieg'd that entire market
no it didnt? they're completely different things
if you said Skylanders then yes
Does this mean a not shit publisher can start work on some real, non-mobile marvel games now?
Want to feel really angry and disappointed?
THQ's cancelled Avengers game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bd4OeguMpI
This is truly the darkest timeline.
This kills Avalanche Studios too btw
This kills Avalanche Studios too btw
To clarify: Avalanche Software is being closed.
Avalanche Studios (Just Cause, etc.) is unrelated and unaffected.
As a kid I would have loved that! Problem is well, first off the toys themselves don't look to... well, playful, they look too solid and stiff and are too expensive because of the built in components to make them work with their devises.
This is exactly why I said LEGO Dimensions. Sure, since they're licensed products they're expensive but yeah... LEGO!

It's a shame considering how long Avalanche Software has been around.
It's a shame because the Disney Infinity figurines were really cool

I wouldn't mind having them all sitting on my desk
Tbh Amiibo pretty much Blitz Krieg'd that entire market
I think the word you're looking for is kamikaze'd.
I'm not surprised, while I do think that amiibo did have a part in DI's downfall, it's probably just a matter of its audience moving on to something else.
I'm also not surprised that they gimped their video game division almost entirely, Disney isn't a company that would want to take the risk of properly investing in a medium they don't have very much experience in (not to mention, you rarely see a big release nowadays that's primarily targeted towards children).
no it didnt? they're completely different things

little collectable toys that unlock things in a game
how are they really that different? they unlock different things yeah but they're basically the same thing
So that's why infinity 3.0 and it's figures was not released in Russia... Well, time to go to ebay and buy some of the 3.0 figures while they are available.
All I know about Disney Infinity is that one of the minigames is basically bootleg Splatoon. Didn't look very fun, either.
