Steve Carell is leaving 'The Office' next May, E! confirms.
Carell told BBC in April that his contract expires at the end of this season and he did not plan to renew it. Now he has made it clear he wasn't just holding out for a better salary.
"I just think it's time," Carell told E! "I want to fulfill my contract. When I first signed on I had a contract for seven seasons, and this coming year is my seventh. I just thought it was time for my character to go."
Somehow he sees the show going on without Michael Scott.
"The show is great, and the ensemble is so strong, and the writers are great, so it's just one part of that ensemble drifting off," he said. "They've incorporated so many new characters and so many new, great storylines that I have no doubt it'll continue as strong if not stronger than ever."
This week's New Yorker has a profile on Carell in which he is quoted talking about his future:
Friend writes, "when his contract expires, next year, at the end of the seventh season." Carell seems a bit surprised to have become a star. When he goes on talk shows, he says, "I play a character who's more fascinating and gregarious than I am. I can do that for four to six minutes." Friend writes that he "expects the movie offers to dry up within five years, at which point he'll just volunteer at his kids' school."
k see ya
I can't imagine The Office without Michael Scott, it's going to die pretty quick without him.
Hopefully they wrap up the show.
Wasn't this announced a few months ago?
We may finally see him in a tv show that isn't boring
What? Michael Scott is like the banana in a banana split to The Office
I'm going to stop watching it.
What? Michael Scott is like the banana in a banana split to The Office
So looks like his banana will be in someone else's show~~
Pretty much the same scenario as Scrubs with Zach Braff leaving, and look what happened there.....
I'm pretty sure Steve Carell knows damn well the Office won't succeed without him. His character has been pretty much half of the show, the other half being the romance between Pam and Jim. They better suck his dick to get him back if they want the show to keep going. I do like how humble he's being though, saying without the Office he probably won't be offered movies in five years time, and then he'll go and teach kids. Something makes me think that won't really happen.
Michael Scott is The Office. They better shut down or make an equally interesting character.
Also a heartwarming goodbye episode for Michael.
The show already went way downhill this past season. Next season just needs to be about wrapping everything up and it should be the final season.

Are you kidding? He doesn't need The Office to get work, he's fucking hilarious.

I know, that's what I said. He said his movie offers will dry up in five years, and I said that probably won't happen.
Never really liked the office...
If he's really leaving they better wrap the show up.
Steve, before you leave; can you say "That's what she said" one more time?
What? NO! NO!!
The Office is my favorite TV Show. :smith:
I'll give it a chance without him, but I really don't have my hopes up. All I see is a slow, embarrassing death in the near future.
Like an above poster said, it'll be like Scrubs after most of the main cast left. They'll simply try and hire a new actor to replace Steve, but it'll fail and they'll end up worse off than if they would have just stopped while they were ahead.
I remember the first episode, when he did an impression of Hitler...
I'll never forget that moment.
But do we still have 1 season left with him in it?
But do we still have 1 season left with him in it?
Yeah, although I'm pretty sure the season has already been written for the most part, so they'll have to either re-write it to send off Micheal Scott or just end the series all together.

It was rumored a few months ago.

He will be missed :(
He will be missed :(
Definitely :/
Although, now that I think of it, who would we miss more, Michael Scott or Dwight? Hmmmm...
