I used to be a huge fan of James Rolfe in my early teens, he was kind of a hero of mine and it makes me really sad that this is apparently his magnum opus or whatever
Some of these are pretty bad but what can you really expect, I doubt his budget is very big
I mean it's not exactly a big studio production, for what they're doing I think it's good.

Ashens movie was $180,000 and it actually looked decent. And was actually pretty entertaining
I love AVGN, but man did his movie not work at all for me
For someone who knows so much about film he really did a shoddy job.
For someone who knows so much about film he really did a shoddy job.
I think James Rolfe truly shines in short movie making. Board James and AVGN work because the concepts are simple but the time spans for each video is relatively short, which allows him to work with a basic story or concept without adding too much filler stuff. Haven't seen the movie but I think the problem is that you can't really do something like AVGN, stretch it out over 90 minutes, and expect it to work. I'm still glad that he got to make his dream come true, but I think he was saddened by the general reaction the movie got.
I think he wanted the movie to look home movie-ish on purpose, but to most people it comes across as being poorly done rather than charming. Which is pretty problematic.
His movie reminds me of a ChannelAwesome skit; except stretched out 90 minutes long. Quite literally the devils work.

The part at 0:20 ... why is he filming the black guy in front of a green screen instead of the actual location? Ah yes, I remember why: (skip to 4:14)
Not a fan of that color work.
James is the B-Movie king. Go back and watch his shorts from before AVGN, he is not your Linklater or Lucas. He's more akin to Corman or Kaufman.

Those were made by him alone and have a kinda cool DIY aesthetic to them while simultaneously being kind of impressive with how he worked around his limitations at the time. The AVGN movie has an actual budget and crew and still looks bad, and as a result it's just an actual poorly-made b-movie with no charm to it Making shit that's supposed to look bad only works when it actually looks like it was done on purpose.
