With his long silver beard and white braided uniform, former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop became one of the most recognizable figures of the Reagan era — and one of the most unexpectedly enduring.
His nomination in 1981 met a wall of opposition from women's groups and liberal politicians, who said President Ronald Reagan selected Koop, a pediatric surgeon and evangelical Christian from Philadelphia, only because of his conservative views, especially his staunch opposition to abortion.

only know him by this tbh
I've never heard of him before this to be honest, but from his Wikipedia article he sounds like a pretty amazing guy. Before he became the Surgeon-General he spent like 30 years developing pediatric surgery, and in his official role:
Though Koop was opposed to abortion on personal and religious grounds, he declined to state that abortion procedures performed by qualified medical professionals posed a substantial health risk to the women whose pregnancies were being terminated, despite political pressure to endorse such a position.
Gotta respect him for not letting his personal beliefs dictate government health policy.
Plus his work on AIDS/smoking...damn.
