You know the drill
Progressive Rock? What the shit is that? Progressive rock is an ambitous sub-genre of rock music originating from Britain that fuses rock music with folk, jazz, classical, and pretty much everything else you can think of. It is famous for having lengthy song structures (up to 77 minutes in one case), concept albums, eloquent lyrics, and huge instrumental jams. It spawned from many musicians feeling the need to burst from the bluesy image that rock had at the time, and fuse it with many other styles, particularly eastern. Basically, it looks at standard rock, says "bugger that lol" and then fills a song with flute solos. Where did it come about? Britain, mostly. The Beatles are often regarded as the catalyst, mostly due to their efforts with avant garde and eastern music. But the first true progressive rock album was from King Crimson, who somehow managed to write a jazz-metal song in the 60s. It was also fucking amazing: Another media of which prog spawned from was the psychadelic scene, in fact, the two biggest progressive bands of the 70s, Geneis and Yes, started life out as psychadelic bands, and then there's Pink Floyd, who are, in a word, massive. Literally, one of their albums stuck on the Top 100 charts for about ten years, if I remember correctly. Alright, so what can I expect from prog rock? There are a shit ton of sub-genres, seriously , but I may aswell try to sort all the main ones. Symphonic Here's the arguably most popular one, Yes, Genesis, Camel, the latter half of Pink Floyd's career and so on. It can be catagorised by lush keyboards, lengthy song structure, and lots of input from classical music. Heavy prog Hard rock with a dash of intelligence and time siggys. Lots of heavy metal artists, such as Iron Maiden, take great inspiration from this sort of music. Eclectic prog Awesome shit, manages to blend and mash together styles flawlessly, a song might start symphonic and downbeat and end as a fast pased jazz fusion jam. Listening to an eclectic band such as King Crimson or Van Der Graaf Generator is unpredictable, you'll never know what to expect. Psychadelic Rock :350: Trippy shit. Takes influence from eastern music, avant-garde and such. Prog metal Metal + prog, what's not to get? It also sounds rad as hell, yo. If you like this stuff then go find the post-rock thread wherever it went. Also for funnies: http://www.cracked.com/funny-2359-progressive-rock/
dude you only mentioned jazz fusion in the OP one time. I think fusion was VERY relavent to the progression of the genre.

So today I met Steven Wilson: And tonight I'm going to see him live. He's so short.
Something I am sure was on the previous thread, hilarious prog cheese throughout, but this album is pretty damn good. Sounds a lot like ELP. I talk about this album a lot, but I think this belongs in the new thread's first page. Every prog fan should listen to this album in my opinion. Steven Wilson was boss. They did Radioactive Toy as an encore
Steven Wilson was boss. They did Radioactive Toy as an encore
goddammit dude I really, really hope they come to Australia this year. If they do I'm hoping he'll do a signing session, I think he did one last time he was here.
Despite what it says, it's not the full album. It's missing Brain Salad Surgery and When the Apple Blossoms Bloom Definitely a great prog album though.
Despite what it says, it's not the full album. It's missing Brain Salad Surgery and When the Apple Blossoms Bloom
Those are bonus tracks from the 2008 remaster, though.
Those are bonus tracks from the 2008 remaster, though.
Brain Salad Surgery wasn't on the album of the same name? Well I didn't know any better since I wasn't born early enough to buy big into vinyl. I got it on iTunes. Oh well you're missing out without them anyway.
The title track surfaced for the first time on Works Vol. 2, I believe.
bringing back my unpopular opinion that brain salad surgery is not a very good album except for Toccata
Cool stuff. Quick question then: are Rush prog or hard rock or does it depend on the album?
hard prog
Great album, one of the few that could be called "art metal." :v:
Cool stuff. Quick question then: are Rush prog or hard rock or does it depend on the album?
Under the OP categorys, they would be: Heavy prog Hard rock with a dash of intelligence and time siggys. Lots of heavy metal artists, such as Iron Maiden, take great inspiration from this sort of music. But tbh, it depends on the song
bringing back my unpopular opinion that brain salad surgery is not a very good album except for Toccata
trilogy is my favorite from them
their title album is great prog Brain Salad Surgery is literally the figurehead album of the reason that prog got culled it's so fucking pretentious and has no love to it, no thought and no reason "Look I can play my keyboard really fast" says Keith Emerson - fuck you Emerson I say you can play keyboard fast but Tony Banks played it with feeling, Rick Wright made it sing, Keith Tippet made it bounce etc etc When Keith Emerson did the solo to lucky man everyone stopped still but by brain salad surgery it was just annoying
tarkus is really good too
it's so fucking pretentious
you have just violated prog thread regulations, go to jail.

i'm going to see opeth in may. excited as fuck
Greetings! I offer thee more 70's prog you may not have heard yet! I haven't heard this album till yesterday and it blew my mind. Apparently these guys were a cult prog band that opened for more "popular" cult prog bands lol. These guys are still around and they released an album last year but I have not heard it yet. I am always finding more great underrated stuff from the 70's. It's great.
I haven't been on FP much recently and it's very rare that I post on any forum but this thread caught my attention. I love all the prog that has been posted above but do any of you guys listen to any newer prog? I'm a huge Rush fan and I'm off to see them in London this may (They didn't come to Newcastle this year for some reason) but I thought I'd post something a little more progressive. Here is a fantastic song by British prog-rock band IQ from their 90s concept album Subterranea. Enjoy!
Yeah, IQ are really good. So are Ozric Tentacles (fantastic band) but they're more space rock. I hear that Tales from the Lush Attic by IQ is a good album and I want to hear it. in terms of other modern prog I think this thread is trying to see how long we can go without mentioning Steven Wilson
Tales from the lush attic is their very early stuff. It's good but would rather recommend The Wake, Ever and beyond. Steven Wilson is fantastic, I've seen him twice with Porcupine Tree but I'm very hesitant to proclaim him the new Prog messiah. In terms of modern prog I would also recommend the album COMM by Leed s group The Tangent but I will say most people will hate the singing.
