Soldier has baby on the frontline: Doctors sent from the UK as Army girl - who didn't even know she was pregnant - gives birth after Taliban raid
-Royal Artillery gunner who was deployed with the 12th Mechanised Brigade gives birth to baby five weeks premature -Fijian soldier had passed her pre-deployment training, including an eight-mile march and five-mile run, without realising she was pregnant -British Army handbook editor says top brass will need to 'start thinking very, very carefully' about how female soldiers are tested before deployment
A British soldier who did not know she was pregnant has given birth on the frontline. The woman had a son in Camp Bastion on Tuesday – just days after the Taliban launched a deadly attack on the UK’s main base in Helmand. The baby was born five weeks premature. Last night both mother and child were said to be doing well. A paediatric team from the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford will travel to Afghanistan in the next few days to provide care for the soldier and her son on their RAF flight home.
[tab]Camp Bastion, Afghanistan: A Fijian woman soldier stationed at the British base in Helmand gave birth on Tuesday. The super fit squaddie did not even realise she was pregnant[/tab] [tab]Unexpected task: The soldier, who has not been named, was taken to Camp Bastion's £10million field hospital where Army medics delivered her baby[/tab]
The birth has stunned military chiefs and led to calls for extra medical checks on women who are sent to the warzone. Almost 200 troops have discovered they were pregnant at war since 2003 – forcing commanders to send them straight back to Britain. But this is the first time a UK soldier has given birth to a baby in Afghanistan. The soldier, a gunner in the Royal Artillery who helped provide covering fire for troops fighting insurgents, was unaware that she was carrying a child. She had been deployed with the 12th Mechanised Brigade since March, but two days ago complained of severe stomach pains. To her astonishment, medics informed her that she was about to give birth. She was in the 34th week of her pregnancy, meaning she conceived before flying to Afghanistan for her six-month tour of duty.
[tab]This screengrab of a video released by a Taliban media unit purports to show last weekend's raid on Bastion: The pregnant soldier, a gunner in the Royal Artillery, was part of the forces mobilised to defend the base[/tab]
She was taken to Camp Bastion’s £10million field hospital where doctors – who are more used to carrying out amputations and treating bullet wounds – delivered her son. Despite its location, the hospital is one of the best equipped in the world and has portable X-ray machines, an operating theatre, CAT scanner and an intensive care unit capable of treating up to 20 seriously-ill patients. A military source said: ‘This has left us completely gobsmacked. You prepare yourself for dealing with war wounded at Bastion – not a mother giving birth to a baby. It is the talk of the camp. ‘This is a very unusual case. The mother deployed not realising she was pregnant and had no idea she was pregnant until she gave birth. She has not done anything wrong.’ Lieutenant Colonel Andrea Lewis, commanding officer of the field hospital, said: ‘This is a unique occurrence, but my team is well-rehearsed in the unexpected and they adapted brilliantly to this situation. ‘I am pleased to report the mother and baby are doing well and we are all delighted at the outcome.’
Read more @ Daily Mail Goddamn, she didn't even know. And neither will that kid.
Someone fix the title, for a second i thought it was a miracle that a 4 month old baby was delivered.
5 weeks*, not months. that would just be crazy.
5 weeks*, not months. that would just be crazy.
OOOPS SORRY fml
How the hell did she not know?
She didn't notice she missed her period for 7+ months?
So the child is from Afghanistan, Half Brit half Afghan.
She didn't notice she missed her period for 7+ months?
I already know stress and other factors like that can determine ovulation. For example, under a lot of stress it is common for women to skip their period. I'm assuming battlefield stress can change that
So the child is from Afghanistan, Half Brit half Afghan.
Pretty sure it's based on hereditary of the parents, not location.
She didn't notice she missed her period for 7+ months?
Women who do a lot of exercise sometimes don't have periods either, it's entirely possible that she thought this was the case, due to her training and the actual exertions involved in being on-duty.
So the child is from Afghanistan, Half Brit half Afghan.
it doesn't work like that
So the child is from Afghanistan, Half Brit half Afghan.
yeah that's not how that works
So the child is from Afghanistan, Half Brit half Afghan.
Since it was born on British soil in a base it's a British subject, though its birth place will be that base in Afghanistan. Kinda like how John McCain was born in Panama on a US base.
I love how one of the Daily Mail comments jumps to the important question of their nationality..
there's no possible way she could have not known. She's saying she didn't know to avoid controversy with the military.
Since it was born on British soil in a base it's a British subject, though its birth place will be that base in Afghanistan. Kinda like how John McCain was born in Panama on a US base.
Is the base British soil though, I know the base in Panama you are talking about is a proper US base but I am not so sure about bastion.
So the child is from Afghanistan, Half Brit half Afghan.
Nah, at least far as US bases go, the base is considered to be aart of the country that put it there.
Is the base British soil though, I know the base in Panama you are talking about is a proper US base but I am not so sure about bastion.
I am pretty certain that Camp Bastion counts as Afghan soil, and not British.
She didn't notice she missed her period for 7+ months?
Some people have explained that periods can be missed for other reasons, but on the flip side to that it is possible to be pregnant and still spot. Which could lead you to believe you have had a light period or something along those lines.
She was taken to Camp Bastion’s £10million field hospital where doctors – who are more used to carrying out amputations and treating bullet wounds – delivered her son.
That must have been a pleasant change of pace for them.
that shit sounds crazy bad
So the child is from Afghanistan, Half Brit half Afghan.
african child born in japan raised in america "That mean's he's Blasian"
Born in Iceland but nationality is cuban Callem Ice Cubes
Quick. Get a plane to Cuba... All pregnant cubans are to be flown to iceland immediately!
I was born in a british military hospital in germany but I am not german. My birthplace however is listed as germany and I am entitled to dual-citizenship if I choose to live there.
there's no possible way she could have not known. She's saying she didn't know to avoid controversy with the military.
Of course there is. It's just rare, my friend had the same deal, she had a baby and never knew it, she never missed a period, no matter how many times she went to the doctor, they never found out. She's lucky she doesn't drink.
"I'M HIT! I'M HIT!" "NO YOU'RE GIVING BIRTH!" "WHAT THE FUCK"
Gotta say that would be one hell of a story to tell her kid when he or she gets older.
Disregarding the whole period thing, which has some legitimate explanations, how does a pregnant woman not develop a waistline? All that mass has to go somewhere.
5 weeks*, not months. that would just be crazy.
I think it's impossible for a baby to survive being born that early, I was born 3 1/2 months premature, doctors were really doubtful I'd live, but I was really fucking lucky.
