A smattering of leaked images of various celebrities in the nude hit the web over the weekend. Initial reports claim the hackers involved managed to infiltrate the iCloud accounts of several high-profile targets, perhaps using the method detailed below. As Engadget points out, the potential exploit is centered around a project on Github called ibrute. Just one day before the images hit the web, ibrute developers said they’d found a bug in the Find My iPhone service in which the service doesn’t use brute force protection (meaning someone can continue to try different passwords until they get guess the correct one). Once a hacker has control of the Apple ID of a celebrity, it probably wouldn’t be too difficult to search their inbox or address book for other famous faces (celebs like to mingle with other celebs). Breaking into the first account would have likely required the e-mail address of the initial target, but after that, it’s open season on other celebs. The good news is that the same developer that spoke of the bug now claims it has been patched. I feel like there is going to be a lawsuit or something.
I like that you used Google Chrome as the browser.
Icloud makes the backups of the entire phone usually automatically then you just use a software like elcomsoft iphone breaker to pull the backups, that is how it usually was done and I assume that was the same way done here but I think he used a new software for it. Surprised it took this long for something like this to happen.
Watch as celebrities jump over to Android devices en masse.
How this could have been stopped: Don't take nudes of yourself and store them on the cloud. Simple, isn't it?
I like that you used Google Chrome as the browser.
Not OP's screenshot.
Seriously this. I can't even fathom why you'd put nudes on the cloud
I'm pretty sure it's on by default. I didn't even know it was on until I got a new phone and my pictures copied over and i'm like WHOA HOLD UP.

There's no point in berating these people for having nude pics, just learn from their mistakes and move on. It's not their fault for having these pictures leaked. Yes, there's a certain amount of risk you take when you take nudes, and if you're really that paranoid then don't take any at all, but it's out of their hands when someone hacks into their data. Don't blame the victim.
I can't wait for the great snapchat leak of 2015 My penis is gonna be famous
I'm pretty sure it's on by default. I didn't even know it was on until I got a new phone and my pictures copied over and i'm like WHOA HOLD UP.
No iCloud is not on be default, iCloud is seperate to your AppleID account.

But you run the risk of them getting out just by having them exist. Even more so for someone of celebrity standards. If I ever had such things, I'd keep them on something that isn't online, maybe a flash drive or something.
I can't wait for the great snapchat leak of 2015 My penis is gonna be famous
People already freaked the fuck out when Snapchat said that they can see everything everyone sends through the service. Yet for some reason people still use it.
not to victim blame because it sucks but if you're a celebrity you really should think about nude pics especially in an age where you already have people chomping at the bit to get insignificant pics of you wearing a different suit/dress or you getting out of the car in hopes for a upskirt shot or other bs
Celebrity or not, you have to be a special kind of stupid to upload something private to a place that's a password away from access. Not trying to imply that they're guilty because they're not but there's no such thing as private on the internet. There are ways to send and store data securely they just didn't bother to use them.

Is it the various hacked celebrities' fault that their pics got hacked? No, because once that stuff is in the cloud there's not much you can do about it. That said, they should not have taken nude pics of themselves in the first place because nobody should ever do that. Saying that doesn't mean saying they deserved to be hacked.
Seriously this. I can't even fathom why you'd put nudes on the cloud
When you set up your iOS device, the default setting is to backup everything and a lot of people miss that because they just keep pressing next so they can play with their newly bought device Google however has it set to optional and pesters you to use Google+/Drive backup when your in the photos app
How this could have been stopped: Don't take nudes of yourself and store them on the cloud. Simple, isn't it?
It was dumb to upload nudes to the cloud, but then again, Apple couldn't be arsed to secure their system well enough. Their biggest mistake was to think creepers wouldn't try to hack their cloud leak their nudes everywhere.
How this could have been stopped: Don't take nudes of yourself and store them on the cloud. Simple, isn't it?
Believe it or not, it's true. It's like placing the porn videos you watch on your Facebook/Twitter feed. No. Please no.
At least this will increase security of sensitive data hosted on Cloud networks.
At least this will increase security of sensitive data hosted on Cloud networks.
Yup. Like hackers won't figure it out later. idk how you think but i think it's fucking stupid to blame the phone user for someone exploiting what is perceived to be a secure system which is on by default anyway then when their tits are in the public domain, they have 20 thou horny men jacking off over their fanpics and everyone goes "WELL DIDN'T YOU RESEARCH iCloud?? THE CLOUD IS NEVER SECURE! HA! SERVES YOU RIGHT!" 10/10
Cloud to butt has never been this amusing
Butt to butt has never been this amusing
Jesus I thought your post was the plugin actually doing it, I'm so stupid. Cloud to Butt is amazing yet so confusing.
Apple did something good for once.
Nothing on the internet is secure, no matter how much these companies say.
