Police Story of the Day: Fla. cop late to work pulled over driving cruiser 120 mph

[release]MIAMI — A Miami police officer is accused of driving 120 mph on a turnpike because he was late for his off-duty job working security at a school.
The Florida Highway Patrol says officer Fausto Lopez was arrested at gunpoint after leading police on a brief high-speed chase.
According to a police report, a trooper spotted a patrol car changing lanes in a dangerous manner earlier this month. The report says the patrol car ignored warnings to pull over and led a brief high-speed chase before stopping near Hollywood.
Miami police spokesman Delrish Moss told The Associated Press on Saturday that any administrative action against Lopez will be taken after the outcome of the criminal case.[/release]

Really, all I can think to say is "Impressive".
"No! I must catch the criminals!" he shouted.
The radio said "No, Fausto. You are the criminals."
And then Fausto was driving 120 mph.

Why does this make me think of something from a lawforkids.org comic?
cop arresting a cop.
Oh man I would have loved to be there.
Wow, he was maxing out the cruiser.
120 is the electronically limited max speed of a Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. (In most cases.)
Awesome, glad to see cops being held accountable for dangerous behavior. "I'm late to be a school security guard" is not a valid excuse to drive 120 mph on a public road and put other people at risk.

Excessive much?
This state has the worst drivers.
Excessive much?
No, high speed chases are often handled like felony stops. I believe anything over 100mph is considered reckless driving and is a felony so she was right.
Plus having a person who is not in uniform/duty in a state/city/county police cruiser is kinda suspicious. Some people are really stupid and might actually steal a cop car, people have done it before.
All this officer was doing is abusing his privilege of driving a police unit and makes his department look bad and wreck-less when that is more then likely not the case.
Its better for an officer to handle the situation she did and handcuff the guy till they can ultimately find out what is going on. Safety first, she didn't know he was a cop first. The hand cuffs can always be taken off and an apology given if the circumstances are different.

Even the cop gets in trouble!

Nope, the limiter is taken out for LE. The max (that I have seen) is 127mph.
Who the fuck points a gun to someone speeding.
Guess it's right to say "Only in America".
Or female police officer.

He wasn't plainclothes, he was in his uniform, you can tell when he approaches the video camera.

People speeding and refusing to pull over all too often have hostile intentions.

Different departments wear different uniforms.

No, it isn't.
Specific upgrade packages will reinforce the vehicle so it can have a higher limit (130) as opposed to the civilian limit of 110. But ultimately the default limiter for most models of the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor is 120 mph.
LE agencies can indeed remove the limiter using the city garage, but it is extremely rare to find it as a department policy to do so. If you are exceeding 120 mph, it is time to call in the high speed interceptor, rely on the helicopter to maintain pursuit, or discontinue the chase.

The grey looks like a security uniform.

Driving 120 miles an hour erratically on the highway and then refusing to pull over leading to a brief chase is going to get a gun pointed at your face irregardless of who you are.
He's not just going 10 miles over and the cop over-reacted. Use your head.

He was on his way to his off duty security job, so that's probably what it was.

This video makes me cry.. quite literally. It's hard to watch someone kill another person like that and have the audio recorded
Wow, I wish this would happen in my state. Saturday, this cop was going over 100 on the highway, then turned on his lights so this dude in a hummer would get out of the way. When he got out of the way, he turned the lights off. Too often in CA do police abuse their power

You don't know why he was doing it though, so don't automatically assume. A patrol officer will tell you most of the time depending on the situation it is easier to drive without code (lights/sirens), you can by pass traffic and over take people easier, with sirens people tend to panic or even worsen their driving. That and it is pretty fucking distracting.
Driving, talking over the radio constantly and having to deal with sirens is a lot to do, specially when responding to something. You're taking in information, giving information and making sure traffic is safe so no one gets hurt.
One is a state trooper the other one isn't FYI that is why the uniforms are different.

I sure hope that they got that asshole and threw him in to the deepest pit in the prison.

I blame the hispanics (no seriously I do, I'm Puerto Rican I know this shit). Have you ever tried driving in Latin America, trust me you don't want to. A red light does not mean stop, a red light means proceed with caution, a green light means go, a yellow light means go. If you happen to stop at a red light (assuming this is one of the countries that takes a red light seriously), and the light turns green and you haven't started driving yet, prepare to have every car behind you start honking the horn. I am so glad I was only visiting and not actually living there.
