The captain of Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia, which ran aground killing more than 30 people in January, has said he is sorry for the disaster. In an interview on Italian TV, Francesco Schettino said he thought constantly about the victims. But he insisted others should also share the blame, saying the ship had been under the command of another officer at the time. Mr Schettino denies charges including manslaughter and causing a shipwreck. The ship struck rocks and capsized near the island of Giglio, off the coast of Tuscany. An Italian judge recently lifted Mr Schettino's house arrest, but said he must not leave his hometown, near Naples, while the investigation continues. "When there's an accident, it is not just the ship that is identified or the company, the captain is identified and so it's normal that I should apologise as a representative of this system," he told Italy's Canale 5 television. The BBC's Alan Johnston in Rome says that Mr Schettino appeared tense. He said he blamed himself for being "distracted" but said he had not been on the bridge when the ship ran aground. "At that moment, I went up to the deck and ordered the ship to be put on manual navigation and I didn't have command, that's to say being in charge of sailing the ship, that was the officer," he said. Following the accident there was speculation that the captain had sailed too close to the island because he was trying to show off his seamanship skills to a young woman on the ship's bridge. Mr Schettino denied this, and also denied that the woman had been his lover. When asked about the youngest passenger who died - a five-year-old girl - he could not answer and broke down. In a letter published recently in Italy's La Corriere della Sera newspaper, Mr Schettino argued that he had saved many lives by steering the stricken vessel into shallow water. In a phone call recorded during the rescue operation, a local port authority chief Gregorio de Falco can be heard chastising the captain and telling him to get back on board the ship to help stranded passengers. Mr Schettino was arrested shortly afterwards.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-18792232
Isn't this the same captain who tried to leg-it instead of trying to stay and help the injured?
Yeah, he panicked. I can't really condemn him for that though as having never been in anything remotely similar I can't honestly answer whether I would hold it together, or break down like he did.
It's kind of hard to try to organize an evacuation when the ship is turning into a wall with in minutes. But having a captain abandon with hands still on board is just cowardice.
I dont think "sorry" will make up for the deaths. You fucked up captain.
It's okay man, it's not like you meant to sink it. <3
if he's the kind of person who panics in that situation, he shouldn't have been made captain in the first place. he seems to be acting quite selfishly, which just further proves he wasn't the right man for the job; the blame falls about half on him and half on whoever gave him a job he couldn't do properly. you don't get mad at a wrench because you can't use it as a car-jack.
"Oopsie Doopsies, teehee!" :v:

Nobody shanghai'ed him into being a captain. He assumed the responsibilities onto himself.
whoops sorry didn't mean to ditch the boat i was a captain of and kill 30 people because of my stupidity! whoops!!!
Scum. His words became irrelevant the second he left his vessel while others were on board and in distress. What a joke of a seaman. He shouldn't even be referred to or associated with being a Captain for what he did.

If the Captain does not do everything he can for the passengers and crew in the event of an emergency then he has failed in his duty.

I am not saying he is clear for what he did, but acting like he is Satan because he panicked is not rational at all.
I know I can empathise with this guy about panicking, but as a captain he should know what's expected of him in emergencies, how much responsibility he has, how people should feel safe in his command; he's a careless fucking coward and it's high tide he started apologising, but all too late imho.

I can understand sympathizing with some kind of temporary crew member freaking out but the captain? Not a chance
I honestly doubt he's actually sorry. Jumping ship when there are others on board is a big no-no.
the human bengs ho died shud be compensaytud fore as they deservd to live
the human bengs ho died shud be compensaytud fore as they deservd to live
You can't compensate a dead human. You can compensate their family members though, but not a dead person. Also, work on your shoddy spelling and grammar.
Isn't this the same captain who tried to leg-it instead of trying to stay and help the injured?
Dude, don't worry. He's sorry. Didn't you read the OP? :v:
I panic a little bit when I break a glass, I can't imagine how fuck'd you'd feel if you broke a whole cruise ship.
