I'm working on a game with some friends for school. It's a 2d action side-scroller in which you play as a panda spliced onto the body of a T-rex.
I'm in charge of most of the visuals and on-screen stuff like the hud and menu, but for now I just want to show off my work so far on the Pandasaur.
Concept work:

What do you think looks better, the black outlines, or the darker fill colours?

The first one, definitely.
second one
This is both terrifying and awesome
The first one, without the darker outline looks better. I like the style of it as well, looks fun!
First if it get a little darker outlines.
The darker fill color. The black makes it look like a coloring book.
The panda fur needs some merging with the T-Rex scales.
Damnit, you know you can make it cuter than that.
Okay, a few revisions based on some of your suggestions:
Some fur merging (anyone have another idea on how to do this?)

Darker outlines, added stitching to the seam, slightly bigger pupils

Anyone have suggestions on making him a bit more cute?
(remember that the only thing that really matters is the in-game size)
The sema doesn't look right to me.

Agreed. Took out the stitching, changed outline on the head so it doesn't create such a hard outline, added a mouth.
y/n?

It's kinda cuter without the mouth I think....
Bloody brilliant.
You could make some of the dinosaur skin (scales?) white and black to merge the animals together better.

I don't want to add too much detail like scales for a couple of reasons. It doesn't always look great when you shrink it down to the size it appears in-game. I tried experimenting with a scaly texture in Photoshop and I couldn't get it to look right after you shrink it down past a certain point. I think the overlapping fur looks alright.
I think I'm finally happy with the design:

Though the changes from the first version are pretty small, I thank you kind people for your suggestions
Now, to start animating this beast
WIP walk animation :buddy:

Blends together quite well, but a bit less bob up and down might make it look better. I'm not sure. Just my two cents.
Is it's head not suppose to move?
Is it's head not suppose to move?
Hadn't gotten that far yet.

Softened the bob, as Muffin suggested.
id play this for the novelty of saying "im a Pandasaurus"
I've gotten to the point where I can call it a finished walking animation after about 2.5-3 hours of work:

It ain't perfect, but it ain't too bad either
Might add some animation to the tail.
The darker fill colour looks better in my opinion, the blakc outline really destroys the shading.

looks very natural good job
Maybe the head/neck should bob forwards and backwards more, like a pigeon... or like raptors in Jurassic Park.
Animate the shoulders 'rolling' (aka: moving backwards and forwards along with the stripe) This will give a 3D feel to it, and help it look more fluid.

One last thing, the head looks a bit off on the walking, but that might be OCD. I still think it looks great though. Nice work.
Yeah, I'm still tweaking the walking animation, but I decided to move onto some of the attack anims.

I'm trying to do a melee-kick animation, but can't decide on whether to make him turn, forwards, backwards, or just sit on his tail and kangaroo kick.
The kangaroo one seems like the one that would fit a 2D game the best.
I don't understand why his head doesn't move down when the rest of his body does when he walks. You just stretched out his neck instead.
