So, does anybody else on Facepunch love Underground Hip-Hop to no end? I've been on a huge kick of it lately, and was wondering if anyone wanted to share their favorite artists. My favorites are Atmosphere, MF Doom/ Madvillain, Aesop Rock, and Mos Def.
Black Star (Mos Def)- "Definition"

Atmosphere- "Trying to Find a Balance"

Without a doubt Mos Def, Mathematics is my favorite song.

Also recently came across Das Racist, they have 2 mix tapes out and both are brilliant.

Dilated Peoples are also great

lil b BASEDGOD
Odd Future Wolf Gang
Mos Def and Talib Kweli. We came to rock it all to the tip top. Best alliance in hip hop. Whyooooooooooo.
Blackstar isn't really underground though but yes, I do love underground hip hop.
Does Nujabes count? Here are some really nice beats.
World's End Rhaspody

Lady Brown

Song of Four Seasons (Rap Remix)

Atmosphere is probably my favorite underground artist. He might not be the most talented rapper, but he puts a lot of heart into his words, and he's pretty damn funny if you listen to some of his lyrics.
I've been listening to the "To all my friends" EP a lot recently, it's pretty bloody good.
roots manuva :)
the songs in the OP are awesome.

Well, Underground is an umbrella term. I usually use it as a synonym to Alternative Hip-Hop. And compared to rappers like Lil Wayne and Drake, Black Star is underground.
Cella Dwellas - Land of the Lost
These guys have a really dark jazzy feel. Good shit.

Da Grassroots - Eternal
These guys only put out one album but it is damn good. K-os is featured on this song, and he is always excellent.

Freestyle Fellowship - 7th Seal

Souls of Mischief - Medication

The underground gives me hope for rap and hip-hop. Too bad the mainstream is filled with so much shit. Miss the good days.

True that. I absolutely hate Lil Wayne fans, "LIL WAYNE IS THA BAST EVAR!".
True that. I absolutely hate Lil Wayne fans, "LIL WAYNE IS THA BAST EVAR!".
I hate underground hip-hop fans constantly crying about how popular rappers suck and how their favorite mediocre rap groups don't get enough radio play and how they know about "real hip hop" but I don't cry about it all the time.

I remember hearing about Nujabes death, sad shit.

This is probably one of the best hip-hop songs I've ever heard in my entire life.

So, you like shallow lyrics talking about bitches and violence rather than about real life hardships and lyrics that make you think? I highly doubt anybody on Facepunch actually have bitches or partake in violence. Most mainstream rap also has lazy instrumentation and relies on gimmicks rather than talent. Honestly, I don't care if my favorite rappers are played on the radio. I just want them to have more respect and for people who listen to the terrible aforementioned music to just shut the fuck up about it.
For whatever reason, I cannot get into Atmosphere. I have no clue why.
I'm definitely going to check out a lot of the stuff posted in this thread, though. Quite a few artists I've never heard of.
On another note, I've recently discovered MC Paul Barman, hilarious stuff.
So, you like shallow lyrics talking about bitches and violence rather than about real life hardships and lyrics that make you think?
I don't need rappers who dropped out of high school, trying to sound smart by rhyming big words, to help me think. I have books for that.
And if you think Lil Wayne, Drake, T.I., Nicki Minaj, and Hov don't rap about "real life hardships" then you haven't been paying attention.
I highly doubt anybody on Facepunch actually have bitches or partake in violence.
Because Mos Def's ultra-pro-black lyrics are so much more relevant to the average Facepuncher.
Most mainstream rap also has lazy instrumentation...
Yes, playing your music on a synthesizer is much lazier than looping a vinyl record. Again, if you honestly believe this you aren't paying attention.
...and relies on gimmicks rather than talent.
Every one of the rappers I named again is vastly more talented than the guy from Atmosphere.
I just want them to have more respect and for people who listen to the terrible aforementioned music to just shut the fuck up about it.
We'll shut up about the music we like when you shut up about the music you like. Deal with it.
So, you like shallow lyrics talking about bitches and violence rather than about real life hardships and lyrics that make you think?
Because cotton candy that's popular is better than overthought, whiny cotton candy that is slightly less popular.
I highly doubt anybody on Facepunch actually have bitches or partake in violence.
I also highly doubt anybody on Facepunch kills hundreds of people or rules over gigantic armies. Why do they play FPS and RTS games?
Most mainstream rap also has lazy instrumentation and relies on gimmicks rather than talent.
What the hell is lazy instrumentation? I'm asking this as a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer.
And gimmicks? Good thing that's something completely avoided in the underground.

Oh wait.
Honestly, I don't care if my favorite rappers are played on the radio. I just want them to have more respect and for people who listen to the terrible aforementioned music to just shut the fuck up about it.
"I don't care if my favorite rappers are popular, but I care if my favorite rappers are popular, wahh, wahhh".
I really don't understand how so many gamers hate hip hop unless it's underground, whiny, unfun, and guilt-ridden Puritanical bullshit.
Why are some forms of mainstream escapism acceptable to enjoy while others make you a mindless idiot?

That is absurd. Atmosphere's lyrics tell stories that make you think. They make you feel emotions that the rappers who rely on autotune and catchy lyrics don't.
I also never said that any rap that isn't underground is bad. I personally love Notorious BIG, 2Pac, Dr. Dre, Big Boi, and Outkast. I just don't understand the hype behind Lil Wayne.
Atmosphere's lyrics tell stories that make you think. They make you feel emotions that the rappers who rely on autotune and catchy lyrics don't.
Yeah. Atmosphere and the 590369187540 other rappers out there who don't use autotune.
Fuck. People think that good lyrics are a rarity in the hip-hop community. They're not.

Okay.
Honestly, I'm just trying to justify my dislike of most of the Mainstream Hip Hop. Maybe my points have holes and aren't all valid, but either way, I still don't like it. I was just trying to refrain from saying "I don't like any of that" without any way to back it up. Sorry if I offended you or your music taste, Lil Wayne is just not for me.

Yeah, disgust :v:

You don't have to like anything you don't want to, but it's a long way from "I don't like Lil Wayne" to "it makes me angry that other people like Lil Wayne"
Lil Wayne is fucking shit
Yeah, disgust :v:

oooh shit, man I love Atmosphere but that burn was just too good.

Fixed that for you :allears:
Is this thread about lil Wayne? No.
