According to the suit, the hospital canceled the surgery because Mackenzie no longer was covered by health insurance. She died of cancer in March of 2011. Before Gonzalez was fired, Wells Fargo and United Health Care, the health insurer, asked Gonzalez's wife "numerous questions" about Mackenzie's treatment and made "several references ... to the costs of her treatment," the lawsuit states. Around that time, Gonzalez's supervisor told Gonzalez that Wells Fargo was looking for reasons to get rid of him, according to the lawsuit. "This was a loss of an innocent child's life," Jack Scarola, Gonzalez's lawyer, told The Huffington Post. "There were [some] Wells Fargo employees who not only lacked compassion but seemed to have been motivated by entirely improper concerns about finances." Wells Fargo, for its part, is defending itself against the allegations. "While we're very sympathetic to Mr. Gonzalez for his personal loss, his termination was unrelated to the allegations included in the lawsuit," said Bridget Braxton, a spokesperson for Wells Fargo, in a statement. "We intend to vigorously defend the matter in court. We support and value our team members and our employment practices are in alignment with that focus." Wells Fargo claimed to fire Gonzalez because he allegedly had falsified his time records, according to the lawsuit. But his supervisor had input the time records and said it was fine that he could not always remember the exact hours he worked, the lawsuit says. After Mackenzie was diagnosed with cancer in December of 2008, Gonzalez started working in other locations because of her cancer treatment. The lawsuit details that Wells Fargo also did not give Gonzalez information about how to continue his family's life insurance coverage -- information he was promised after he was fired, leading to the expiration of his plan. The coverage included life insurance on the lives of his children, according to the lawsuit. As a result, Gonzalez's life insurance policy expired before Mackenzie died, and Gonzalez was not able to receive life insurance compensation for Mackenzie's death.
Fucking disgusting, Wells Fargo can go fuck itself.
And she fucking died. Wonderful.
And then universal health care is evil. Right.
I actually switched from Wells Fargo about a month ago because the fucks shut down my Checking and Savings accounts for no reason, then charged me overdraft, even though I had enough money in them to cover it Fuck You Wells Fargo
i hope their stocks fucking plummet.
Not sure what else you'd expect from insurance companies that always try to make profit
A company that makes BILLIONS if not TRILLIONS (counting all the under the table thievery they do) can't afford one man's health insurance? If they don't want to pay it, WHY OFFER IT IN THE FIRST PLACE?!
oh for fucks sake
I would love to see someone justify the lack of universal health care when things like this are allowed to happen. I can't even describe how much it disgusts me that even with health care it can just be pulled from under you like this and leave you to die.
This should be considered murder.
This should be considered murder.
uhh.... not really
Big banks can burn in hell. Long live credit unions!
Yeah Allstate is a really bad example of private insurance too. Even if you stay loyal with them for decades, once you turn around 50 they'll drop you for any possible reason they can find just because middle aged people and up are typically more expensive. Of course they all try to pull shit.
Holy fuck that is one scummy thing to do, the people responsible for this better get screwed over.
If there was ever any proof that health insurance should never be a private matter this is it.
Wells Fargo are definitely one of the worst banks you can bank at. They will charge you fees up the ass.
one time a really drunk 40 year old lady from wells fargo started hitting on me only time ive ever been hit on... sigh
And then universal health care is evil. Right.
if we had universal healthcare, then she'd wait a ridiculous amount of time for the surgery, and maybe would've died in the process. there's a reason why Canadians flock here for surgeries and procedures. this is an isolated incident among thousands of other times where employer insurance has done great good.
This is why i like Canada :)
if we had universal healthcare, then she'd wait a ridiculous amount of time for the surgery
uh no she wouldn't. if we use actual factual information, something which i'm sure you are averse to, we can see the average wait time for specialized treatment in Canada is a little over four weeks. as someone who has worked with other people receiving treatment i can tell you that people in the US also wait for long peroids of time when it comes to treatment. stop defending this horrible practice.
uhh.... not really
If the employee isn't bullshitting then Wells Fargo knowingly allowed a girl to die just to save some money. But it should be involuntary manslaughter or something else.

Even in the very face of what is so wrong with private healthcare there will always be those that try to justify it.
Stories like this make me embarrassed to be a human.

Hey GOP: Kill yourselves -The Human Race
Hey GOP: Kill yourselves -The Human Race
I'm pretty sure at this point if the GOP manages to get into power the Middle East will declare war. They'll probably figure the GOP's going to want to send in the entire US military to wipe out dem terorists and decide they might as well just get started early.

I had to wait three weeks to get surgery for a potentially life threatening kidney stone here in the states.
