Runescape bot nuking event bans 1.5 million bots in one day - Polidicks

[release]At this year’s Runefest event, Jagex revealed a number of alarming statistics regarding the number of bot accounts and gold farmers the devs have recently booted out of Runescape. The figures, picked out by[URL="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/30/runescape-dev-panel-highlights-incredible-success-of-bot-bans/"]Massively[/URL], suggest that between 100,000 and 200,000 bot accounts are created in Runescape every day.Jagex released the figures to celebrate “bot nuking day,” in which they launched new anti-bot measures that they estimate to have removed 98% of the bot accounts in Runescape. At the height of the nuking process, 9,000 bot accounts were being banned every minute. By the end of the day, 1,500,000 bots were gone. These enormous figures give us a surprising insight into the size of the bot problem in Runescape. It would be fascinating to know whether these figures are similar among other free to play MMOs, or even mammoth subscription ones like World of Warcraft.Jagex CEO explains why the developers decided to come down so hard on botting. “It breaks the game. How does it break the game? Well, it’s not just the balancing, the economy and the inflation and the deflation, which obviously a lot of you feel so acutely, but it fundamentally changes the nature of the game. I remember they had a ban wave in WoW too, the number of bans was in hundreds of thousands I believe. Right before Age of Conan came out rushed.

I remember in the later days of Classic, people had bots whos only purpose was to walk in circles to all the main towns. They'd stop, let people follow them, and then walk to the next town. The train bots were the most useful breach of rules in the whole game. Shit was boss.

I remember playing Runescape in 2003. Then I died in the wilderness and lost most of my shit, never returned.

It also counts as a companion, so it will fight alongside you, even if stolen.

My proprietary bot is still going strong. Make the game fun to play if you don't want people botting.

I wonder... Edit: Hahahah, still not banned. Some time ago, I botted for a week to get a dragon hatchet to cut stuff faster by cutting and selling yew trees. Still not banned. Looks like the last thing I was doing was evolving my magic on the sewers against skeletons and zombies...

I remember moving from Runescape in 2005 to Tibia. I had good times in Runescape tho, but just like Tibia and all those GRINDGRINDGRIND kinda games it get boring after a while.

I used to like Runescape before I played actual good RPGs It opened my eyes to the fact that all I did was watch my guy hit enemies and trees to level up stuff and nothing else

Say what you want about Runescape's community, graphics, or what have you - those developers are top notch, and the amount of content you get both for free and for a pittance of a membership fee is absolutely jaw-dropping.

Man Runescape was such a fun game. I never got any 99 skill capes when I played it, I feel like a loser.

Unfortunately, as a result of the bot nuking, many accounts (Such as my own) that were inactive for 30+ days have lost all of their money and valuables. Fuck you Jagex, I worked hard for that stuff in your increasingly-boring game.
