Four people are dead after a small plane and a glider collided mid-air just outside Pemberton, B.C. near a full campsite on Saturday afternoon.
Whistler RCMP Sgt. Rob Knapton said police received several 911 calls about the crash at approximately 12:20 p.m. after a powered glider and a small Cessna 150 collided near Nairn Falls provincial campground near Pemberton, about 50 kilometres north of Whistler.
"Both planes came down to the ground along with some debris," Knapton told reporters. He said both the Cessna and the glider caught on fire at "some point" but said he was unsure if the blaze on the planes had started before or after they hit the ground.

Airspace is a lot tighter than people would like to think. The mental image is absolutely horrifying.

That is not FAA or ICAO, and relies on data from volunteers, also does not include cargo or military, so it leaves a false impression, there could be even more.
Holy fuck Europe
These are only aircraft with a certain type of transponder on-board, there's god knows how many thousands of other aircraft flying around in the same airspace that it cannot track.
Usually only commercial airliners carry the required transponder so you need to add all the general aviation, military and helicopters, gliders and microlights to that.
Then again Europe does apparently have the busiest airspace (due to the small size), if I remember rightly the bit right above me is supposedly the busiest in the world.
But yeah, holy shit there's a lot of aircraft flying around at any one moment. It is amazing there are not more mid air collisions to be honest.
Holy crap, a flight from glasgow was about 20 kilometers from my home, went for a cig and it flew right above my house :D
Just from looking up i can an average of 5 planes at any time

Does wonders meaning it reduces your fear from how safely everyone can fly in such a crowded air or does it increase your illogical fear?
Airspace is a lot tighter than people would like to think. The mental image is absolutely horrifying.
Not really, I fly small single-engine Cessna/Diamond aircraft and have little problem navigating around local airports. It's all about keeping your head on a swivel and the idea that "You're a soft being in a thin aluminum can flying hundreds/thousands of feet off the ground" in the back of your mind.
That is to say, it isn't not dangerous. We have a 'glider-port' up North-West out of Boulder, Co. and it has been the cause of a few Glider/Powered Aircraft accidents.
Personally, there should be better regulations on Gliders and radios with increased air traffic. As it stands, an aircraft in VFR conditions, outside of certain airspaces, does not require a radio- Which makes for potentially hazardous conditions when aircraft converge and cannot speak to each other.
