Game publishers and developers have spent a great deal of time dreaming up bizarre ways to get people to vote for their games on Steam's crowdsourcing Greenlight program, but this might be the grossest.
In a bizarre, misguided attempt to get people to vote for their game Edge of Space, publisher Reverb Publishing is promising to donate $5,000 to the Humane Society, an animal protection group.
If Edge of Space doesn't get approved by October 15, Reverb won't donate the money. And... well, I'll let them explain what happens then. Here's the press release we got today (emphasis mine):
Reverb Publishing and HandyMan Studios' upcoming terraforming space-adventure, Edge of Space, recently broke the top 50 on Steam's Greenlight project, but the game needs help getting the final push to the top 10 and approval. In honor of one of the many bizarre characters players will meet in the game, an armored space cat, Reverb Publishing is issuing a pledge to donate money to the Humane Society if the game sees approval on Steam.
If Edge of Space is approved by October 15, 2012 through Greenlight, Reverb Publishing will donate $5000 to the Humane Society, which will go towards providing necessary care and safety to homeless cats. However, if the game doesn't get approval, that money will disappear, like a puff of smoke in the uncaring wind, leaving poor kitties to survive in the harsh elements, be placed in harm's way and possibly scheduled for euthanasia. The challenge is out there, and for a simple "yes" vote on Steam's Greenlight consumers can actively take a role in saving the lives of kitties. So, do your part, save some cats, and see a great space sandbox adventure get onto Steam's platform. It's a win-win!

the game they are trying to greenlight:

What a horrible ad campaign
People are actually downvoting it based on a bad joke. Why would you do this
edit: actually, greenlight doesn't have a downvote, does it? Just clicking the "no thanks" button, then I guess. :v:
Looks a bit like a rip-off of Starbound (the game that the Terraria Devs moved onto)
The game looks bad.

they have (a few) sweet sprites in there though
Looks like Starbound.
Well, even if they didn't do that distasteful and kinda silly marketing ad, it pretty much looks like a near-carbon copy of Terraria/Starbound. So yeah, downvoted.
It looks like a horrible reskin of terraria.

bad ad campaign, game looks like it could be really cool though
also why do these games have such awful soundtracks
Was not surprised at all to see what kind of game it was seeing the Steam page.
They'll donate the money regardless and say it was the plan all along.
I'd rather wait for star-bound thanks
shit game, shit marketing
i'd rather donate money directly thanks losers, hope you make no money!
I don't care how terrible the ad campaign may be, any game with rocket sharks is okay in my book.

[SUB]But seriously this game does seem like a ripoff[/SUB]

The backgrounds are bright and distracting on the low-contrast foreground.
That's one of the fastest ways to make a game look terrible.
Hey everyone! There has been a misunderstanding on the marketing side of Edge of Space.
We do not support guilt voting in any way and our sincere apologies go out to anyone who felt that way. This was meant in fun, if anything, Reverb's intent was to add a bonus; if we can make it to the top 10 by the 15th, we will help out a worthy cause.
Understand that there is some dark humor in the game and they wanted to play off of that. We love CATS!!! That's why we have them in our game to begin with! We have sugar bears too!!! So we like exotics.

Voted yes.
Good, cats kill important bird populations in suburban areas. We need less cats.
huh apparently i nothanked this a while back
..Considering the Humane society doesn't actually donate money to shelters? Probably best to downvote anyway.
