Homeless Man Arrested for Stealing From the City of Sarasota, Florida
SARASOTA, Fla. -- A homeless man spent the night in a Southwest Florida jail after a police officer accused him of stealing by charging his cellphone at a public park.
An arrest report says that a Sarasota police sergeant spotted 28-year-old Darren Kersey charging his phone Sunday evening in a public picnic shelter at Gillespie Park. The sergeant told Kersey that the "theft of city utilities will not be tolerated during this bad economy" and then arrested him on a misdemeanor charge of theft of utilities.
Unable to pay the $500 bond, Kersey spent the night in jail. But the Sarasota Herald-Tribune reports that Kersey was released Monday morning after a judge threw the case out, saying the sergeant lacked the legal justification to make the arrest.
Put the fucker on death row
Well, at least he got a place to stay for the night.
what kind of officer in their right mind would literally arrest someone for this? Like what was going through his head that he thought it was necessary to send a homeless man to jail for something so trivial? Ironically he probably wasted more money being in jail than he would have ever used in electricity charging his phone

First up against the wall when the revolution comes my brother.

The only thing I can understand is that the town doesn't want everyone to start charging their phone in the park because then the costs will add up, but I don't see why they couldn't have given him a warning.

Yeah, the average citizen will probably start going to the park to charge all their electronics, rather than doing it from the comfort of their homes.

Fuck this gay earth
but it costs more money for you to go through the process of arresting him than for him to charge his phone...

and the valuble time of officials, and of courts, and the police

And thus skynrdfan3 discovered the hypocrisy of bureaucracy.
Maybe the officer simply felt so sorry for the homeless person that he wanted to help him find somewhere to stay so decided to wait until he did something minor.

gas from his patrol vehicle with the extra baggage in the back seat. Tire wear to add later on. The cost of office supplies. Officers on payroll. The city workers
all this for a, what, 10 minute cellphone charge? gg

I am actually pretty sure it would cost much less than 1 cent.
Maybe the officer was just trying to get him a place to spend the night
