Prime Minister Tony Abbott says he has written back to Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono as he tries to smooth diplomatic tensions between the two countries brought on by spying allegations.
Indonesian has demanded Australia explains why its spies tapped Mr Yudhoyono's phone and those of his inner circle, including his wife's, in 2009.
On Thursday, Mr Abbott told Parliament he had received a letter from the Indonesian president.
His admission came a day after Indonesia suspended military and intelligence cooperation with Australia, with an angry Mr Yudhoyono announcing he would write to Mr Abbott demanding an official explanation of why Australian spies tapped his phone.
Mr Abbott says he has replied to Mr Yudhoyono's letter, but did not reveal the details of his correspondence.
He said one of his priorities as prime minister was to maintain a strong relationship with Indonesia.
"There'll be good days and there'll be better days. But my determination is to ensure that the relationship is constantly improving and my gratitude is always to president Yudhoyono, who has been a very good friend to Australia - one of the best friends we've ever had," Mr Abbott said.
It was before he was even in government mate, it was most likely initiated by the labor government.

When you become PM, you shoulder the responsibility of all government present and past. The fact that Abbott didn't address the spying, or have plans to address it that we know of, means that he was at least aware of it and chose to let it continue.

I find it's that he has responded (and I hope that he has done so in a very polite manner), I really hope that we can abolish the spying program and strengthen ties with indonesia. Also plans aren't usually released to the general public unless it has been deemed ready for release by party members (I think).

I agree...
Pretty hilarious that Indonesia has asked Snowden for even more details about spying, urging him to leak more. I'm going to laugh so hard if he releases details that Indonesia were spying on us, as it's pretty clear that they are.
This whole issue is going to harm Indonesia far more than it'll ever harm us, so keep carrying on like a crybaby SBY, you're only harming your country even more.
