For over 35 years, the Expanded Universe has enriched the Star Wars experience for fans seeking to continue the adventure beyond what is seen on the screen. When he created Star Wars, George Lucas built a universe that sparked the imagination, and inspired others to create. He opened up that universe to be a creative space for other people to tell their own tales. This became the Expanded Universe, or EU, of comics, novels, videogames, and more.
While Lucasfilm always strived to keep the stories created for the EU consistent with our film and television content as well as internally consistent, Lucas always made it clear that he was not beholden to the EU. He set the films he created as the canon. This includes the six Star Wars episodes, and the many hours of content he developed and produced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. These stories are the immovable objects of Star Wars history, the characters and events to which all other tales must align.
Now, with an exciting future filled with new cinematic installments of Star Wars, all aspects ofStar Wars storytelling moving forward will be connected. Under Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy's direction, the company for the first time ever has formed a story group to oversee and coordinate all Star Wars creative development.
"We have an unprecedented slate of new Star Wars entertainment on the horizon," said Kennedy. "We're set to bring Star Wars back to the big screen, and continue the adventure through games, books, comics, and new formats that are just emerging. This future of interconnected storytelling will allow fans to explore this galaxy in deeper ways than ever before."
Well there goes my faith for the upcoming movies.
They're probably gonna use the shittier parts of the EU for future endeavors but one may hope we can enjoy a solid Kyle Katarn adventure in future.
If it didn't happen in the 6 movies it never happened
They weren't already?
Anyway, I'm fine with that. Extended universe has come up with some pretty great things, like the KotOR games. Although, to me, the extended universe and the movies are still in separate boxes, and they always will be.
Well here's hoping the films are about the Yuuzhan Vong.
title's incorrect, they explicitly said they aren't canon
In order to give maximum creative freedom to the filmmakers and also preserve an element of surprise and discovery for the audience, Star Wars Episodes VII-IX will not tell the same story told in the post-Return of the Jedi Expanded Universe.
Perhaps an important part of the article left out of the OP.
If it didn't happen in the 6 movies it never happened
this + the thrawn trilogy + republic commando + KOTOR 1 and 2 + Jedi Academy /Jedi Outcast 1&2 + Shadows of the Empire
If it didn't happen in the 6 movies it never happened
Excuse me? 6 movies? So what is that? A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, Return Of The Jedi, The Ewok Adventure, Ewoks: The Battle for Endor, and the Holiday Special?
If it didn't happen in the 6 movies it never happened
If the extended universe is the equivalent of bad fanfiction, then the prequels are the equivalent of forum arguments about fictional politics.

You know something's wrong when people would rather consider the Holiday Special canon than the prequel trilogy.
If it didn't happen in the 6 movies it never happened
You mean the 3 movies?
Unless they make even more prequels, I think we can innnocently pretend the pre-Episode 1 stuff would still count with these movies.
Though all things considered, anyone still a big stickler for Star Wars's EU can just ignore these new films entirely, if they like.
I can see that KotOR 1/2 are now canon but is ToR? I'm going to assume it is seeing they used footage of it in the video
;_;
just give Kyle Katarn and other Jedi Knight related stuff.

The video was just about the EU itself in general, not what was canon and what was not.
just give Kyle Katarn and other Jedi Knight related stuff.
Agreed.
Dark forces, jedi knight, anything related to katarn was fucking badass. He's one of the most interesting characters to come out of the SW canon because he's not full "light side's the shit y0".
There goes my hope for a Dark Forces film.
Interesting, I just assumed non-film material was canon already
I hope we see a film about Thrawn or Pellaeon.
If it means Thrawn in a movie (done right, mind), then all power to this.
im saying it again
hugo weaving as Thrawn, maybe fassbender, and youve got a 10/10 movie there
Well I guess that's the end for Durge and General Jedi Terminator
General Jedi Terminator
Grievous? Hes in Episode 3, so he is still canon.
Also I'm pretty sure Clone Wars is included in this.
For every good thing the EU had it had an equally terrible thing
Plus all the different writers created a lot of discrepancy, just look at the wookpiedia page on the mess that is the Deathstar plans
can a mod please fix the title lol
Agreed.

Katarn is great because he goes from pretty much generic scum to jedi, then to fallen jedi then back to what some consider a grey master. Out of all of them he's the most interesting and unique purely because the guy holds no sides to dark or light, he uses everything to his own choices and can flip sides at anytime if his moral ground gives away.
As long as they don't fuck with Rouge and Wraith squadrons, we're good.
I don't mind of they don't do direct adaptations of the books, but they shouldn't entirely abandon the EU's cast of characters. There are some really great ascended extras and additional characters that would work well in the new movies.
What is obvious here is that Disney is trying to turn Star Wars into Marvel 2.0. They are seeing literally tens of billions of dollars over the next decade in movies, games, tie-ins, merchandising, cross-promotion...everything they've been doing with Marvel for the past few years. This could be good, or this could be bad. It could turn out that for every Avengers-quality Star Wars movie, we have to put up with a few Thors and Hulks.
Rogue and Wraith Squadrons should stay, but I think they should get rid of that whole 'Lusankya coming up from under the city' thing.
