When a small force is place, it releases the tension and the fuse is lit. Tapping it is safe enough, but if he pressed with any kind of effort or even put resting weight on it, it would go off.

Mines in jungles and other densely wooded areas or difficult terrain must be the worst to get rid of. At least in an open field you can just drive a mine flail to set them all off and be done with it.

Note he was named nicknamed akira after the manufacturer for his consistency and efficiency. Its hard to believe this selfless guy was imprisoned for his work.

While we're on the subject on landmines, I looked up if there was any treaty to ban mines. You're not gonna attack a base cause its covered with shitload of mines.
