"The New American Bible" 2011 edition goes on sale Ash Wednesday, March 9.[/tab]
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has ordered up a new translation of the Bible, one it says is more accurate, more accessible and more poetic. Now "booty," a word that sets off snickers in Sunday school, will be replaced by the "spoils" of war when the newest edition of the New American Bible, the English-language Catholic Bible, comes out on Ash Wednesday, March 9. "We needed a new translation because English is a living language," says retired auxiliary bishop of Milwaukee Richard Sklba, part of the review and editing team. Fifty scholars and translators, linguistics experts, theologians and five bishops spent 17 years on the project. They were immersed in original manuscripts, the Dead Sea Scrolls and archaelogy findings unearthed since research behind the current text, published in 1970. While Catholics may read from any of two dozen English translations, the New American Bible is the one owned by U.S. bishops for prayer and study.
Bible updates Leviticus 2:1 1970: When anyone wishes to bring a cereal offering to the Lord, his offering must consist of fine flour. 2011: When anyone brings a grain offering to the Lord, the offering must consist of bran flour. Psalm 1:1 1970: Happy the man who follows not the counsel of the wicked. 2011: Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked. Source: U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops
Some of the changes:

The word "holocaust," now associated with World War II genocide, has been replaced by "burnt offering."
The 1970s version of the 23rd Psalm — "even when I walk through a dark valley" — becomes a "walk though the valley of the shadow of death."
Proverbs 31:10, the ode to "The Ideal Wife," is now a "Poem on the Woman of Worth."
"Women will like this: being measured by their own accomplishments, not in terms of a husband's perspective," says Mary Elizabeth Sperry of the Bishops Conference. One change may set off alarms with traditionalists, in a passage many Christians believe foreshadows the coming of Christ and his birth to a virgin. The 1970 version of Isaiah 7:14 says "the virgin shall be with child, and bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel." The 2011 text refers to "the young woman" instead. It elaborates that the original Hebrew word, almah, may, or may not, signify a virgin. Sklba expects no change in Catholic teaching. And Sperry predicts, "Some people will be gravely distressed and others will be absolutely ecstatic and some will just say, 'I liked it the old way.' " For young readers, however, there is no "old way," says John Kutsko of the Society of Biblical Literature. "Young people are accustomed to change."[/release] About time, if you ask me! Now I can preach my archaic and irrational superstitions in a more modern, politically correct way! Yay! :D

I am a pirate and I am offended by this change.
So every other bible from Moses till now is wrong and should be burned. Repent, christians! Repent!
From what I gather, they just translated everything into a more modern dialect. I don't see what's so bad about that.
Sounds like something Stalin would have said.
So? I'm sure Hitler has once said "Gott", which means "god". [editline]3rd March 2011[/editline]
It's not too late, brother, to open your heart to Jesus. The amount of godlessness in some posts amaze me. :Dawkins102:
Then again I doubt your god has an account on these forums.
Then again I doubt your god has an account on these forums.
It's your god too, whether you like it or not, brother.
It's your god too, whether you like it or not, brother.
the "a" in "atheist" is a denial. "atheist" means "no god". I thought you christians learned not to force their religions down other people's throats?

Yay! :D
Huhuh, you're so cool because you mock Christians. Hey everyone, this guy is COOL. He's a COO' KID. He disobeys his parents and all the kids look up to him! I don't see what's so bad about that.
on FP, mocking Christianity and religion in general makes you look like a 'KOOL KID!'(read: massive douchebag.) At least, that's what most of the 13 year olds here think.
Huhuh, you're so cool because you mock Christians. Hey everyone, this guy is COOL. He's a COO' KID. He disobeys his parents and all the kids look up to him!
You have a wrong image of the avarage atheist. Let's not turn this into a "Atheists suck!" <> "christianity sucks!" discussion.
You have a wrong image of the avarage atheist. Let's not turn this into a "Atheists suck!" <> "christianity sucks!" discussion.
Maybe that's because most Atheists I run into are liberal douchebags who have patience for nobodies opinion but their own. Nothing on you, of course; you don't seem that way if indeed you are an Atheist. Edit: You do realize that by rating me dumb in RAEG, You're just proving my point?
If the bible can change that much in 30 years, in a time where everything is recorded so well, imagine how much change it has gone through in the 1800 years before that? Back then it not only suffered from edits, but also miscommunication and mistranslation. How one can claim that this book is still the word of God, is beyond me, when none of the original words are even in there.
the "a" in "atheist" is a denial. "atheist" means "no god". I thought you christians learned not to force their religions down other people's throats?
Wouldn't be a good christian if I didn't, wouldn't you agree? :v: [tab]Hahahaha I'm just taking a piss out of you, man ;D[/tab]
Huhuh, you're so cool because you mock Christians. Strongbad, instead of wasting your energy being all deffensive, you should be reading this new bible... we could use a thorough review of it, in order to engage in a decent (and civil) discussion, don't you think?
Sounds like something Stalin would have said.
Funny, because that sounds like something HITLER would've said!
From what I gather, they just translated everything into a more modern dialect. I don't see what's so bad about that.
There's already a problem with that: God's word doesn't change. Or shouldn't. If you need to change the Bible, there's something wrong with it, and it's not God's word. They're trying to preserve the original texts, "the original God's word", but in the process they run into disagreement with already accepted beliefs, such as the belief that Mary was a virgin.

I don't care that they say 'booty.' Actually, I'm reading through the bible, and I have yet to meet a single case of -*giggle*-booty. :v: [editline]3rd March 2011[/editline]
There's already a problem with that: God's word doesn't change.
