• The Milk Tea Thread v. What is Boba?

That fabulous beverage portrayed in the photo above is what we call milk tea. Milk tea is a drink that is simply tea with milk added in. Although it may seem like a gross concept, it is pretty delicious and you have to try it before you knock it. I would compare it to a latte but with tea flavor instead of coffee flavor. So basically a cup of divinity. You can look for milk tea at select local stores. The kind of milk tea you will likely find is bubble tea. Other names they go by are pearl milk tea and boba milk tea. I'll address the recurring theme in these names in a moment. The drink is based in Taiwan and bubble tea chains such as CoCo can be found all around Eastern Asia and occasionally in other parts of the globe. These drinks are made with a tea base and then most often a creamer is added. Some milk teas are made with a fruity syrup instead of or in addition to milk. Available flavors are extensive and include Chocolate, Vanilla, Taro, Banana, Strawberry, Lychee, Almond, Coffee, Green tea, and more depending on where you get yours. So what is boba? 'I thought we had already discussed boba...' Well yes, but this is boba: These "bubbles" are made from tapioca and are pronounced 'boba' in Chinese. They are typically a quarter of an inch in diameter and have a chewy consistency that gets thicker towards the center of the pearl. It provides additional sweetness to the drink and is fun to eat. This form of tapioca is almost exclusively used with bubble tea and extra wide straws (as pictured in the first photo) are made to accompany the size of the boba. There's also something called popping boba, which is typically used as a topping for frozen yogurt but you can often times request to use those in lieu of tapioca boba. Another more common substitute to boba are jellies which have a rectangular-prism shape and come in an assortment of flavors. You can also order bubble tea without any boba or jellies. Boba is a defining feature of bubble tea, so much so that bubble tea is often referred to as simply 'boba'. If your friends on Facebook have tried it before, they probably call it boba. You can ask them where you can get your hands on some yourself. Then you can finally experience the joy of balls in your mouth. [editline]21st June 2013[/editline] My friend works at a frozen yogurt place that also sells bubble tea. He is coming to my house later and he's bringing me a banana bubble tea with strawberry boba. I'll get a picture of it when he gets here. [editline]22nd June 2013[/editline] I lied, I finished it before I took a picture. I can still say it was delicious.
a whole tea thread could be useful, you can easily write a whole thread on that.
Yesssssssssssssssssss. http://www.amazon.com/Bigelow-French-Vanilla-Tea-20-Count/dp/B000GG5IY6 I have an entire shelf of my pantry stocked with these, and this with milk and some sugar or honey is the best thing there is.
brb getting milk tea. Thank you.
I always add milk to my tea... unless its the tea you get from Chinese restaurants...
Boba tea is awesome. So many flavors and the tapioca balls are a blast to eat.
My personal favourite is Hong Kong milk tea. Which is like concentrated tea with evaporated milk

I have a Thai iced tea addiction.
The bokas were so much fun to have spitball fights with.
bubble tea is awesome and all but can be expensive right? anyone here got a recipe that actually works (ive failed twice.)
I got bubble tea in china when I was there, and it was phenomenal. Here in the states it just isn't the same. Still really good though, now I want some.
There's a cafe I know that makes chocolate milk tea with boba. It's sinfully delicious.
Milk Tea, also known to the english as...well....tea.
The milk tea of the fucking gods:
Honeydew milk tea are the best, even though they are not exactly the original milk tea.
i didn't think that Americans drank tea considering that when i was there the tea that's sold in your stores is absolutely disgusting and inferior to "British" tea in every single way - and i don't even normally like tea. and as far as the British are concerned adding milk to your tea isn't anything outrageous and wouldn't constitute a whole thread
I quite like milk tea but it's stupidly expensive where I live so I've only had it a couple of times.
Milk tea? it's just called tea here, all tea has milk added
Honestly, I was curious about this. I found out recently that the small games store I used to buy PS2 games from closed down and a Boba Tea place opened where they used to be. I guess I'll try one next time I'm around there. Also, I too used to just add milk to hot tea steeped from tea bags.
Why not just a general tea thread? I fucking love tea. I'm British, it's in my blood!
god damn I fuckin' love this shit
Boba is ridiculously tasty.
and as far as the British are concerned adding milk to your tea isn't anything outrageous and wouldn't constitute a whole thread
least where I live, it's becoming a trend. Around here, it's a treat that you would pick up like an ice cream cone or something.
Yeah in the U.S boba tea is significantly different than normal tea.

Why not just make a general thread for Tea (and maybe coffee)? this seems like a really niche and pointless thread
me and my buddy got some bubble tea once we walked by a gold PT cruiser parked on the side of the road and seriously considered spitballing the boba at it
Tea with milk in it? So basically a cup of tea then?
