i didnt even know we had photography satellites that hang out that far
it was launched earlier this year
It's cool to actually see a real size comparison between the Moon and Earth in one photo
Fucking NASA with their acronyms. I genuinely thought they titled the video as EPIC.

DSCOVR, the satellite that caught this, is an earth and solar weather observation satellite. To have an uninterrupted view of the Sun and a mostly uninterrupted view of the Earth it has to go to Lagrangian Point 1, or L1.

Basically, it's in a closer orbit to the sun, but due to Earth's gravity is has the same orbital period (L1). It's actually 1.5 million kilometres away from Earth!
We've had 3 satellites there. One of them was the ISEE-3 satellite that people re-established contact in 2014 and tried to maneuverer it to return to Earth's orbit (but failed due to a lack of nitrogen pressure.)
