LONDON -- Five British universities have banned Robin Thicke's hit single "Blurred Lines" from campus bars, amid claims it "excuses rape culture."
The students’ union at London's Kingston University has become latest to refuse to play the song. It had previously been removed from playlists at Edinburgh, Leeds, Derby and West Scotland universities due to its allegedly misogynistic lyrics.
“The song hugely objectifies woman and excuses rape culture,” said Hollie O’Connor, president of the University of Derby Students' Union. “It is a man suggesting that there are ‘blurred lines’ when it comes to sexual consent and that is unacceptable. We felt we needed to take a stand.”
Its just a song guys...
not only is this late, but it's also not a big deal in the slightest. there are like 4 rooms where it could have been played (at edinburgh anyway) and three of them are pubs that wouldnt have played it anyway. it's also a pretty fucking creepy song when you read the lyrics.
This song was so overplayed, it got old so quick...
Blurred Lines is one of the worst songs I've ever heard. Although the video for it is pretty sexual, I think this is a bit much.
i fully support the banning
Deja Vu...

Censorship of any sort is indeed a pretty big deal
Not to mention "creepy lyrics" is a piss-poor justification for banning a song

good it's a shit song anyway
im a bit skeptical of any sort of art being censored by government institutions... =\
guys i listened to blurred lines and now i'm literally a rapist. how do i repent for my sins against female culture?
Nevermind the meaning of the lyrics, it should be banned everywhere for being a terrible song.

Student unions are not government institutions
They're just banning it because it got popular.
So many worse songs slip right under their noses
i fucking love blurred lines. that song is catchy as hell. plus that one girl in the video is hot as hell

" Five British universities have banned Robin Thicke's hit single "Blurred Lines" from campus bars"
this implies the university itself is banning them.
I'm fine with this. Its a fucked up song that tries to convey the idea that its ok to sleep with a girl because she seems like she might secretly want it even though she isn't consenting.

nobody is deploying the Thought Police to kick in people's doors and stop this music from being played, it's just saying "yeah probably not a good idea to play this publicly." to call this censorship really cheapens the term

it's a top 40 pop song. this is totally censorship.

yea saying something isn't fit for the public is, by definition, censorship.

none of those songs actively promote sexual assault though. this isn't about it being creepy or unsettling, it's about it being an extremely popular song that actively promotes the idea of drunk girls asking for it, which is kind of shitty to play at events where people might be drunk and partying
Honestly
I've never heard this song before. I've heard of it but I've never bothered listening to it, nor have I ever heard it on the radio or from someone's cellphone
all they're doing is saying they don't want their facilities and equipment being used to play the song. it was voted for by the student unions i really don't see the problem here. you can still listen to it on your ipod or whatever

would it be ok for the student union to ban political songs in school facilities as well, then?
would it be ok for the student union to ban political songs in school facilities as well, then?
i don't think that's the same thing though. and i mean surely you do have to draw some lines when it comes to a school. would it be fine for student facilities to be blasting white power music?

i don't think it's fair comparing a song that glorifies date rape to a political song anyway
would it be ok for the student union to ban political songs in school facilities as well, then?
Yes. Its supposed to be a place for education first and foremost. Not a campaign rally.

it's totally fair in the sense that music is an expression of ideas. even if that idea is dumb, it is still valid in a public forum. i'm more concerned because this is in a university, which is meant to be a place specifically designed for the sharing of ideas. it's obviously quite ironic to ban expression of certain ideas from such a place.

that would eradicate the socialist worker's party completely then.

Holy fuck I'm choking.
That's not a political party, it's a glorified newspaper company.
Plus banning songs would eradicate it? Since when did political parties survive solely by playing music to people and hoping they made recruits that way?

oh i know this.

no banning "campaign rallys" and political messages in public universities would eradicate it.

If banning political rallies in unis is enough to kill a party, it's a pretty awfully managed party. Just saying.
Banning an atrocious song like this is not remotely comparable to censorship of political ideas, opinions, or other such things. It's just stopping an awfully written, slightly catchy, but overall horrible song from being played on university equipment because the majority of students seem to have agreed it's an awful message.

would you promote the idea of a song advocating the murder of non-white ethnicities being played at functions in schools where white people are the majority? it's simply a matter of making people feel safe. you of all people should agree with this based on your arguments in the GTA V thread.
