I agree, pretty much this once consoles game could be no longer(PS2) just plump the game in and play there started to lose there worth the one thing they have going for them now is exclusives
I jumped off consoles once online was required for multiplayer or even the gameplay. No sense paying for online access again when you already pay for your ISP. I miss having splitscreen action.
I have a PS4 but i dont bother playing online games with it.
single player only.
Never was interested in paying more than i already do to my ISP for online.
I still own consoles for exclusives but these "hidden" problems can get infuriating. Right now, if I want to buy a new game (on DISC mind you) I have to uninstall one of my other games in order to fit the new one + patches. In total I can fit maybe five games on my PS4. Sure, I could buy a bigger hard drive but then we run into the problem of "hidden" fees for a system that is supposed to be a cheap alternative to a good PC. Add to that the monthly online subscription and the fact that games are 10$ more expensive.
When I installed DOOM for PS4, I had to download an 18gb patch and couldn't play until the next day and then I had to do an install like what Jim had to do with Mafia 3. Need for Speed also had a long ass install after you have to install patches and "install" the disc. Downloads suck ass too because you have to wait for your PS4 to prepare the download and then once that's done however long it'll take, then you can set your PS4 to rest mode so you can go play your PC games while you wait.
I waited years for MGSV, got a PS4 just to play the collector's edition and when I popped the disc in, I had to wait for the disc to install, download patches, and then once I had all that done, I had to wade through several different error messages and apologies from Konami about how they're having server issues

good god why would you play an fps on the console was you're pc broken?
Sony's bullshit about "pretending" that the PS4 is better extends to marketing, too. For like a year, No Man's Sky was advertised as "For Playstation 4" with no mention of "also on PC" and it's not the only one of Sony's pretend exclusives out there. NMS was also supposed to have a global unified release, and then in the final few weeks that was mysteriously changed to "PS4 gets it up to 3 days ahead depending on region" in another round of Sony self-favouritism. (NMS has a lot of other problems but that's off-topic)
The PS3/360 generation got cocky and forgot what their advantages over PCs were while trying to compete with PCs on their advantages. The current generation doubled the fuck down on every one of those bad decisions, and the result is everything we mock them for: games framelocked at 30fps and often dropping far below, shitty online you have to pay for, ridiculous day-1 patches (sometimes larger than the content on the disc), multi-hour installation processes when the game should be 'ready', basically no modding ever, and long loading times between scenes/sequences/levels.
PC Master Race is a meme no one should take unironically but PC really is the superior platform this time around. That's what competition within a platform does for you, rather than having two competing walled gardens.

I have a gamefly account and I figured it would be cheaper to rent the game for 2 weeks than spend $40 to play it once on PC. It plays fine on PS4 but I played on ultra violence which fucking sucks if you die a lot because PS4 load times aren't short and you have to wait a few seconds before you can press retry because you have to wait for the PS4 to save.
Same thing happened with Mad Max on PS4. I really enjoyed the game and the performance was fine but the load times made pre-patch Bloodborne's seem short
The only platform that has a proper working play-while-you-download feature seems to be Battle.net. It properly shows progress from Not-Playable to Playable to Optimal to Done and generally behaves as you'd expect it to. Recently Overwatch even preloaded a patch so I didn't have to wait as long when the patch did release. That was a nice surprise too.
I think Steam had a play-while-you-download feature too. The only time I saw it working was with Half Life 1. It did work very well though.
Playing on console sounds like a nightmare.
It's infuriating playing on consoles, especially if you're into online play because of that p2p subscription bullshit that's enforced right off the bat. My brother bought a PS4 this summer and a 3 month Playstation Plus subscription and when it expired the fucking thing has become a paperweight because all the singleplayer games are already beaten and the online games are walled off by the paywall. 400 euro spent on this shit and I have to fork out more for online play? Fuck off I am saving up for a pc.

It's not as bad as he's making it out to be. The mandatory installation sucks, but it usually doesn't take as long as he says (the longest I had to wait was an hour and that was for Mafia III) and part of his problem was the PS4 has a download speed cap which the Xbone doesn't have afaik. Paying for multiplayer is bullshit though. If I do get a game where I intend to play the multiplayer, I will get it for my laptop.
Probably the only pro consoles have are some exclusives and they tend to be way less finicky when it comes to performance.
Consoles also don't make you fuck with drivers and remembering to do OS updates and install prerequisites (if they don't automatically install) to make sure games work. That's one thing they've still got going for them.

Noone ever mentions PC in their marketing since "Xbox/PS4 exclusive" sounds better than "Also on PC". It's not just Sony.
holy shit i hate this so much. PS4 is so inconvenient compared to PC yet PS+ costs $70 a month, Jim is totally right.
the only advantage i would even say now is short term price and exclusives, nothing else is better on consoles.
I could never stand subscribing for online access. I switch what console I use all the time depending on which game I'm focusing most on. It would bug me to no end having to either pitch a lump of money every time I feel like playing a multiplayer shooter or paying an annual fee for a system I'll boot up a few times a year.
I'll stick to my PC and my Wii U thankyouverymuch.

What?? Is it really $70 a month to play multiplayer on PS4?
Not even Xbox Live Gold is that bad
i thought PS+ only costs $60 a year? that's how much it was for me, at least.
im retarded, $70 AUD a year, my bad.
It's $10 a month here if u only go monthly but the service is garbage, shit takes forever to download and there are constantly connection errors and whatnot.
PS+ sucks though. If you're like me and only want to play Bloodborne, then you have to shell out $60 a year or $25 for 3 months to get the full experience and even then, you still have to deal with the netcode so you might not always get summoned or summon someone and if you do, it's probably going to be very laggy. I don't know how they managed to scam gamers into paying $60 for something that doesn't even compare to XBL.
Oh right, because people wanted to play Destiny back when the PS4 really had no games instead of just a few worth getting.
remembering to do OS updates
I dunno man I get that all the time. Put in game, "This game needs to update!", ok then update it, "Cannot update game until console is updated!", fine, exit game, go all the way to system update, wait for it to do all that and restart before I can then update the game and finally play it close to an hour later. This is something I've experienced on PS3, PS4, PS Vita and the Xbox One.

OS updates are certainly a thing on consoles, but they throw it at you directly. This is something they can do because the console's more of a single-purpose machine compared to PCs, and games are released with the cooperation of the platform owner.
I don't know how many times I fixed someone's issues in the Rust subforum with the words "have you done your Windows updates?" and it turns out they hadn't in so long that they were missing something important enough to break OS compatibility with Unity games/Rust's anticheat.
I didn't say it was a massive advantage, nor were consoles entirely immune to the pain of updates, but at least if you're missing something it'll straight up shove it in your face that you have to install it.
I'm so out of the loop with the console world that I had no idea any of this happened. The last console game I played was on my 360 back in 2009.

The problem with this argument is you can set your PC to automatically download new updates or tell you when new updates are available.
On consoles, this is either not available, or at least on the PS3, a paid feature. Yep, you need to pay for PS+ for Sony to graciously download and install system updates as soon as they come out instead of only when you try and do anything online.

That is absolutely fucked up.
I actually own a PS3 and never knew this.

PC certainly has the edge in actually giving you options and flexibility for dealing with the updates, rather than a "UPDATE AND OBEY, CONSUMER" screen like you get on consoles, sure, no argument there. But PC also allows you to ignore those updates even when ignoring the install prompt will be detrimental to your gaming/stability/security experience.
I mean ultimately the argument I'm making is that consoles baby the user in terms of maintaining the system underneath the games, and when it comes to a complex computer that the average consumer is going to tend to regard as an appliance with the same care and attention paid as the toaster, this is sort of a good thing. It could certainly be improved, especially in terms of how fast and convenient the download is presented to the user (making automatic updates a PS+ feature is a shit move, period, and Nintendo's digital downloads have always been frustratingly slow too), but it's serving a fairly specific purpose.
I'm a power user and it's not what I want; it's pretty clearly not what you want; but we're both posting from PCs, so we're clearly well-off enough to have the choice of platform.
