The director of India's top investigation agency faces fierce criticism over his controversial comment, “if you can't prevent rape, you enjoy it”. Rights campaigners demanded the resignation of the country’s top investigator.
"It is sickening that a man, who is in charge of several rape investigations, should use such an analogy. He should be prosecuted for degrading and insulting women," local politician Brinda Karat told The Hindu newspaper.
Idiots like these are the societal problem, right there.
Fuck this shit. Would it kill you to not put your foot in your mouth every time you open it? It's moments like this where I really get worried about what's likely to happen in the future of this country.
As Sinha explained to the Hindustan Times, he meant to say that “lotteries are already legal” and so, he said that “betting could be legalized, it can be taxed.”
“To make this point, I just used a proverb,” he told the newspaper.
A great point but the worst possible choice of words, especially with all of the rape coming to light.
He looks blazed.
If youre gonna get stabbed you might as well have a laugh
He looks blazed.
if you can't prevent red eyes, you enjoy them
Reading through the article I get what he's saying and yeah he admits it was a poor choice of words. It doesn't sound like he's at all suggesting that you enjoy rape though.

It's not just a poor choice of words though. On a subconscious level this is what a lot of Indian men actually think when it comes to rape victims - that they "deserved it", that they were dressed sluttily, that they wanted to have sex anyway, etc. There are tons and tons of recorded cases of politicians, other senior police people in India making similar comments over the years as well.
Ever since the horrible Nirbhaya case (the one with the brutal gangrape of a woman on a bus), a lot of men have gone dark about this sort of shit but you can always sense it being there under the surface, because they know that actually saying such complete and utter bullshit will just make everyone fucking destroy you for having such horrible ideas.
A big problem is that a lot of the people currently ruling this country are old geezers who are set in their ways and beliefs and still carry that shitty '50's man's world ideology into the modern world, especially when it comes to women's issues like this.

Its a shame that even some of the most advanced countries have people like this controlling their government.

Well, the state of democracy in my country (and probably something all democracies face) closely mirrors this lovely passage from The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy:
[An extraterrestrial robot and spaceship has just landed on earth. The robot steps out of the spaceship...]
"I come in peace," it said, adding after a long moment of further grinding, "take me to your Lizard."
Ford Prefect, of course, had an explanation for this, as he sat with Arthur and watched the nonstop frenetic news reports on television, none of which had anything to say other than to record that the thing had done this amount of damage which was valued at that amount of billions of pounds and had killed this totally other number of people, and then say it again, because the robot was doing nothing more than standing there, swaying very slightly, and emitting short incomprehensible error messages.
"It comes from a very ancient democracy, you see..."
"You mean, it comes from a world of lizards?"
"No," said Ford, who by this time was a little more rational and coherent than he had been, having finally had the coffee forced down him, "nothing so simple. Nothing anything like to straightforward. On its world, the people are people. The leaders are lizards. The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said ford. "It is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them," said Ford. "They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates to the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards?"
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard," said Ford, "the wrong lizard might get in. Got any gin?"
"What?"
"I said," said Ford, with an increasing air of urgency creeping into his voice, "have you got any gin?"
"I'll look. Tell me about the lizards."
Ford shrugged again.
"Some people say that the lizards are the best thing that ever happened to them," he said. "They're completely wrong of course, completely and utterly wrong, but someone's got to say it."
These are the people we elect because the straight stand up guys don't stand a chance in politics, because politicians would promise you the earth, moon and the stars if it means getting your vote, only to ditch you when they come to power and then go on to do shit which is completely against what you stand for during their term in power.
After that, the cycle repeats, only some new person comes along to make a chump out of you, the voter. I still remember one guy telling me this point blank over drinks : "Let's say I, as a reasonably educated voter, makes a good choice on a potential candidate. The moment I cast my vote, it immediately gets undone by someone casting a vote for his opposition because the guy promised all the people who voted for him would get a free TV (Yes, that actually happens)."
But even through all of this, there are some departments that actually do their job right and are pretty non corrupt, like the ISRO - to put in perspective how successful their recent achievement was. The cost of the Hollywood movie "Mission to Mars" was more than the cost of the actual mission to Mars. :v:

Couldn't resist... kinda reminds me of the obey face.

This analogy is idiotic regardless of context, but it is compounded by the fact that it is an investigator in India. Disgusting.
Reminds me of that Republican senator. I suppose it's a good thing that a shitload of Indians fucking riot to protest stuff like this. Shows you the country isn't culturally fucked up, despite all the bad press they've been getting.

That's so hilariously appropriate :v:
I can't imagine what it'd be like to be an actual real life rape advocate

Koechlin is awesome and that video was too, thanks for sharing, it illustrates this problem pretty accurately, especially that bit with the copper.

I think he's incredibly pragmatic.
Please don't take this the wrong way Please don't twist my words, please don't call me something I am not(even though I know you all will)
Is it impossible that what he meant was "If you can't fight off your attacker, then submit to it until it is over so that he doesn't kill you"
it is not right by any means but even the military has language like this. If it's the difference between a rape and a murder, I would assume that submitting to hte rape and then contacting hte authorities after may in some cases be your best option for survival.

"You enjoy it" is kind of extremely specific
and if you don't try and destroy people's career for shit like shit then rape is going to continue being a major thing
I would assume that submitting to the rape and then contacting hte authorities after may in some cases be your best option for survival.
because india's authorities give a shit about rape victims right?
I'm sorry, you're not trying to justify what he said, but that was just so naive of whats really going on here. This guy is an asshole and deserves only cynicism and anger in response to being a giant asshole.
for some people it's probably better in their own opinion they died rather than get raped... at least then the murder is taken more seriously and they don't go through the horrible stress of dealing with all this shitty victim blamers... or the insane bottled stress that goes with it.
Yeah, man, just have fun with it.

As rangergxi pointed out, he suffered from a bad case of foot in mouth syndrome by trying to make an analogy based on his shitty view of rape and women, which backfired horribly.
But then again, guys like him in particular usually try to backtrack on what they say especially when they realise that it's pretty disgusting on matters like this. Many politicians and senior cops have been caugt out like this talking out of their ass because they don't know the first thing about women's rights and are still stuck in the "Women belong in the kitchen and are dainty little flowers not be sullied by being left alone" way of thinking.

The second post in the thread clarifies it, even.

Damn you snooky :c

I guess I was just searching for anything other than the apparent disgusting view that he has on rape and women in general, but apparently it is just that and nothing else.
fire him on the spot

I try and find the best in people too but this guys just a dick
for me there was no "maybe he meant something else" or "he's only human"
no its just "No, he's just a dick"
hmm... it seems he was saying the opposite actually
he was saying even if you couldn't enforce the laws, they should still be made.
it just seems he badly fucked up his sentence structure or something.
also isn't RT bannable?
here is a better source.

Thanks, mate  - I was stuck between choosing my preferred source (The Hindu) which didn't have a lot of information or the Times of India (Which is the worst paper imaginable). i was aware of the bias Russia Today tends to have, but after reading the report, the facts are accurate and show concurrence with the other reports covering the incident so I thought it would be okay, just this once.
On the matter of what he said - he didn't quite fuck up his sentence structure, he just chose a very poor analogy to drive his point home which was ridiculously offensive and also ended up showing his internal views of the matter of rape, which is why he got skewered like this. He tried to back track and say that his comments were taken out of context but when you get down to brass tacks what he said, even out of context, is still very offensive.
