Same-sex traditional kiss draws support, criticism

It was a history-making kiss seen around the world. Just months after the military's ban on gays was repealed, a pair of female sailors shared a coveted first kiss at yesterday's Oak Hill homecoming in Virginia Beach.
The tradition is as old as Navy homecomings, but this kiss was unlike any before it.
A stroke of raffle-ticket luck put a female petty officer named Marissa Gaeta pier side with her girlfriend, also a sailor. It is the first time this homecoming first-kiss tradition has gone to a same-sex couple.
Navy brass called it a non-event, and wanted to talk about the Oak Hill's deployment. But just about everywhere else it was a huge event.
The kiss is logged in more than 500 news articles, including the front pages of newspapers from coast to coast. The ground-breaking greeting was also noted in Mexico, England and Australia. Some writers said the historic image of this smooch could rival another famous lip lock, the iconic image that marked the end of World War II.
To these sailors, it marked the end of hiding who they are, and they hope, it will do the same for many others.
Here, in the Oak Hill's home port, reaction was largely positive, but not entirely.
NewsChannel 3's story generated more than 200 comments on Facebook.
One viewer wrote: “Get back in the closet. Bring back ‘Don't Ask, Don't Tell”
And that was one of the more mild reactions.
But love it, or loathe it, there is no denying what happened yesterday was noticed all over the world.
But...they're hot. Even anti-gay people still love hot lesbians. Clearly these anti-gays are gay.
I really don't see what the big deal is, this abolishment of "Don't ask, Don't Tell" is long overdue.
