• Hugo Chavez calls off Venezuela's nuclear energy plans
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez says he is freezing plans to develop a nuclear energy programme in the light of the crisis in Japan. Venezuela signed a deal with a Russian company last year to develop a nuclear power plant over the next decade. But Mr Chavez said events in Japan showed the dangers of developing nuclear power were too great. Chile has said it still aims to sign a nuclear accord with the US next week despite the crisis in Japan. Countries around the world have been reconsidering their nuclear policies in the face of the crisis at Japan's Fukushima nuclear complex triggered by last week's huge earthquake and tsunami. President Chavez said he was calling off Venezuela's plans to build a nuclear plant. "It is something extremely risky and dangerous for the whole world," he said. "Despite the great technology and advances that Japan has, look at what is happening with some of its nuclear reactors." Mr Chavez added that global concerns about the safety of nuclear power would boost demand for Venezuela's oil exports. Chile option In Chile, President Sebastian Pinera said he would go ahead with a nuclear co-operation deal with the US that is due to be signed during President Obama's visit next week. Mr Pinera said Chile had to keep the option of nuclear power open to fuel its growing demand for energy despite anxieties over the nuclear disaster in Japan. "Chile needs to learn about nuclear energy, and that is why we have signed accords with France and Argentina and we will sign another with the US," he said after meeting the Japanese ambassador to express his condolences. Like Japan, Chile is on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" of seismic activity and is prone to earthquakes and tsunamis.
Source: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-south-asia-12773696
His loss.
oh what a reactionist douche can he actually think with his head rather than have knee jerk reactions for once in his goddamn life
Is it just me or are Countries sort of... Getting paranoid with Nuclear energy?
Is it just me or are Countries sort of... Getting paranoid with Nuclear energy?
Only the stupid ones.
Oh No Nuclear Energy So bad! Look at how many people were negatively effected in 35 Years from nuclear energy compared to say, Crossing the street
Why can't they just fuck off with all this anti-nuclear power bullshit it's really starting to piss me off. All this propaganda bullshit's been spewed out in the past week simply because of the crisis in Japan. I bet you Greenpeace is just loving this yet they are too dumb to realize it has absolutely nothing to do with the safety of nuclear plants itself. Yet, how many people died in Chernobyl? How many people will die from these Japan nuclear plants versus the people dying as a results of burning fossil fuels, or crossing the street?
Hey! That's my example!
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez says he is freezing plans to develop a nuclear energy program in the light of the crisis in Japan.
Wimp.

The nuclear plants may be quite secure and well functioning but if things like this earthquake/tsunami have the ability to endanger hundreds of thousands of people then I don't see how you think it's an overreaction.

Don't get me wrong here, Venezuela has rather frequent earthquakes so I understand their fear there. On the other hand, if people blindly fear nuclear power, they need to go back to school.
"Despite the great technology and advances that Japan has, look at what is happening with some of its nuclear reactors." Well he is kind of right, Venezuela is exactly the type of country where nuclear plants would be the most risky.
one lest meltdown to worry about due to retards.
Despite the great technology and advances that Japan has, look at what is happening with some of its nuclear reactors.
Except it was built 40 years ago.
I'm perfectly ok with this. A Russian developed plant in Venezuela? That sounds like a disaster in itself.
Vuvuzela? Oh you mean venezuela...
I'm perfectly ok with this. A Russian developed plant in Venezuela? That sounds like a disaster in itself.
By now Russian power plants are probably on par with USA built ones.
Yet, how many people died in Chernobyl? Over 4000 people ended up with thyroid cancer, although there was a 99% survival rate. So far in Japan I think around 150 have died from the reactor itself. [editline]18th March 2011[/editline] Note: This is not an argument against nuclear power, I support it. I'm just answering his question.
Is it just me or are Countries sort of... Getting paranoid with Nuclear energy?
Hugo is paranoid of everything. He accused the US of planning an invasion after Mercenaries 2 was released.

I doubt Venezuela even had any nuclear energy plans. Chavez is just an attention whore that realized nobody has printed his name in a while...
But when countries with little to no earthquakes remove their support for Nuclear power, they're just idiots.
Earthquakes aren't the problem. It was the tsunami that caused the problem for the Japanese plants, knocking out any remaining cooling systems. A problem can be caused by any event, man made or natural, but until such a time where it's impossible for meltdowns, nuclear power shouldn't be used.
