http://news.yahoo.com/chicago-mayor-billionaire-clash-over-trump-sign-215718650.html
The installation of 20-foot-tall letters spelling out T-R-U-M-P on the side of the billionaire's gleaming Chicago skyscraper has triggered a war of words between Donald Trump and Rahm Emanuel - with the city's mayor saying he's looking for a way to undo the 'architecturally tasteless' sign, and the developer in no mood to take anything down. The spat pits the abrasive billionaire and relentless self-promoter who turned the words "You're Fired!" into a personal motto against a mayor who did not get nicknames like 'Rahmbo' and 'The Rahminator' because he shies away from a fight. The backdrop is a city that takes its architectural history seriously, where adorning some of the tallest and largest buildings on the planet with the owner's name is seen as poor form.
Good thing he can't fire the Mayor :D. I'm waiting for a boxing promotional poster of them two.

Is there actually a law against having names on buildings in Chicago? Or is the Mayor trying to pick a fight because he personally doesn't like it?
Is there actually a law against having names on buildings in Chicago? Or is the Mayor trying to pick a fight because he personally doesn't like it?
basically it's really high up (higher than signs on other large buildings) and they thing it's distasteful.
basically it's really high up (higher than signs on other large buildings) and they thing it's distasteful.
Being Mayor is not about forcing everyone to meet your own personal fashion standards. It's Trump's building, if he wants to draw his name all over it in red crayon, he should be allowed to.

Should Trump get to decide how many staircases he gets to leave open in his building? Can he ignore inspections if he doesn't like the results? The building itself is enough of an eyesore as it is. This lettering just adds insult to injury.

It's not a danger to anyone and the only people it's pissing off is yuppies who don't like the way it looks. Who gives a fuck if he puts a sign on a building he owns. It's not offensive, it doesn't say something like "Hitler should have finished the job", it just has his last name on it. Chicago has got to be the dumbest city on the planet.
Those have to do with the safety of the occupants. Putting your name on the outside doesn't hinder safety.
True, I should have picked better examples. The city can also demand you have a certain number of rooms per floor, make you have specific amenities in your building that allow it to best be utilized by the people. This isn't something new.
It his tower, he can do whatever the fuck he wants to it
Those have to do with the safety of the occupants. Putting your name on the outside doesn't hinder safety.
Maybe Trumps ego will reach critical mass and suffocate the occupants of his tower.
"I have the hottest brand in the world right now and there are those who are saying I'm doing Chicago a favor," he said. "I've got thousands of people saying, 'Don't do anything with the sign.'"
Does a bigger asshat exist
True, I should have picked better examples. This isn't something new.
Of course. Those are all for the safety, well being, and accessibility. Lettering or signage on a building, as long as it's structurally within code, doesn't decrease the safety, well being, or accessibility of the building.
True, I should have picked better examples. The city can also demand you have a certain number of rooms per floor, make you have specific amenities in your building that allow it to best be utilized by the people. This isn't something new.
Amenities still have absolutely nothing to do with aesthetic design. Trump throwing up a terrible looking sign on to the side of his terrible looking building doesn't violate any safety code and it doesn't deny any sort of accessibility to his building.
The lettering is really ugly, and as someone from Chicago, why? It's the second tallest building in the city, can be seen from practically every part of the city, and has a pretty unique shape. Everyone knows what that building it is, putting some ugly letters that break the vertical flow of the building isn't helping Trump much.

There's a reason buildings can be torn down with the reason of "eyesore". Would you like looking at that sign all the time, towering over you?
Aesthetic design is still important though. There's a reason buildings can be torn down with the reason of "eyesore". I could be in a city where all the buildings looked like giant dongs and it wouldn't make a difference to me. If anything I would prefer to live close to an eyesore like that cause the rent for an apartment would probably be cheaper.
It's absolutely ridiculous that this balding bastard is easily capable of starting shit with entire countries/cities, he's like a 3 year old that's 200 feet tall
Trump should just put a giant toupee on top of the building.
Of all the problems our city is facing, this is something Rahm focuses on? Who cares about what Trump does to his building so long as it doesn't effect public safety.

How can you care so little for proper design? You're trying to argue that because most people have architectural taste and don't want ugly buildings around, that allowing some developers to create ugly buildings you might end up with cheaper rent, at the low cost of having an ugly city?
Should Trump get to decide how many staircases he gets to leave open in his building? Can he ignore inspections if he doesn't like the results?
This has absolutely nothing to do with safety and you know that. Emanuel is trying to take down the sign because he doesn't like how it looks and he feels like he should stick his nose where it doesn't belong.
The building itself is enough of an eyesore as it is. This lettering just adds insult to injury.
I see ugly buildings every day, and you don't see me running for office and forcing people to revamp their structures to appeal to my needs. If they're absolutely going to force him to change it (which is outright wrong in the first place), Mayor Emanuel should, at the very minimum, have his administration pay for the whole operation.
I hope the T falls off and lands on Donald Trump so we can have Donald Trump getting hit by a giant falling T but also so his building says rump on it

Yeah but then the city loses money on property tax and becomes more shit.
The letters are reasonable and fit the building, worry about something a little more important. [editline]13th June 2014[/editline]
True, I should have picked better examples. Trump's a smart guy. He figured out that being Doctor Evil-levels of a supervillain and being a stereotypical rich cunt generates a lot of publicity, and that publicity only gets him more money.
