I am planning on buying a new HD camera and have been doing a lot of research. With all the different types and brands out there what do you think is best one to buy without going over $1000?
Canon 550D
Canon HG10, it has a 40GB HDD and Mini SD for hd photos. I bought it for $400 BH Photo. Here is a video I made with it.

For $1000, a Canon 550D would be your best bet.
A friend of mine has one and its amazing.
Clarification: Are you looking for a video or photo camera? We'll need to know more of what you're looking for than just "under $1000". (ie. DSLR, over the shoulder, huge as fuck, etc...)
Tbh a lot of new Dslr cameras do pretty damn good hd video too
gopro if you do extreme sports stuff, like me :smugissar:

That is true, but on the go, HD Cams are a lot more versatile.

Nikon D3000 for starters.. works fine for me..
The newer DSLR cameras can do pretty good HD video.
My $400 Pentax K-x shoots video 720p @ 24fps (Film quality motion). Top that off with in-body image stabilzation you can have some pretty nifty looking stuff, but the audio is not very good and external microphones are not possible.
Like everyone else is saying the 550D is great. 1080p recording at 30,25, or 24fps and 720p at 60fps and 50fps. I think it's all in-lens stabilization which is fine. This gives you alot of range of what you can do, for instance you can slow down 60i footage to nearly a standstill with the right shot and the software like Twixtor.
If you want something more "handy" then just a regular HD cam is the way to go for something just out of the blue and quick, but if you are going to be doing something where you are planning stuff out and shooting controlled shots then a DSLR is a really good choice, the flexibility you get is really great.
Here are some examples:

This was actually shot with my camera I own, I didn't make the video however.

Here is a bit of slow motion footage that you will be able to accomplish if you go for something like the 550D

The Pentax is obviously cheaper, can get one for about $500-$600
Canon 60d, definitely.
I'm currently saving up for one. It's an amazing camera.
I got banned for posting a "What should I buy" thread, so I recommend you be careful.
But I agree with Bud, get a Canon 60d.

not to mention the sound quality is inferior on dslr
