T.J. Maxx lost its shirt on this one.
After a social-media battering, the budget-conscious retailer is pulling a T-shirt sporting a picture of a noose and the words "Hang Loose."
The flap started when a customer spotted the garment at a store in Kissamee, Florida, Monday night and tweeted her outrage.
"It is absolutely sickening that @tjmaxx thinks it's okay to sell a shirt like this," wrote the tweeter, @PsychoGF_.
It is okay, though. Freedom of expression doesn't care about your perception of morality.
TL;DR person no like thing = noone like thing
why is this a problem, I know people who wears shirts that say 'CUNTS!' in bright letters and no one bats an eye
Got this off the Washington Post article
Inquiring minds want to know. Both TJ Maxx and the Irvine, Calif., beachwear company Tavik, which makes the shirt, were slammed on Twitter Monday night after user @PsychoGF_ shared a picture of the T-shirt with a TJ Maxx price tag. She added some text in a bar across the bottom: “Why is this a shirt?”
“We sincerely apologize for any offense caused by this T-shirt,” Tavik’s PR manager, Kelly McElroy said in a statement to The Washington Post. “This item was released without going through proper protocols and has zero relation to anything other than surfing. We will be pulling this item from retailers immediately.”
No shit this has nothing to do with surfing.
So a lot of people are saying this shit is racist, along with some other depictions of nooses, but why is the noose suddenly a symbol of racism?

Because apparently black people are the only ones who have ever, in the history of humanity, been hanged.

Some people just gotta bitch about everything in this world.
Sounds like this got some people hot under the collar.

I haven't seen him post for a while, so I briefly checked to see if there was some kinda of drama with him saying something horribly racist and getting demodded that I missed.
I know where I'm going today.....
It seems like more and more I hear about these "controversies" involving hurt feelings or some weird sense of "I don't like this, so no one should like this" and it's depressing. Not only because people are wasting time on bullshit that doesn't matter, but because there are real and pressing issues that should be getting discussed but aren't because we're wasting our time and energy on talking about dresses that are oddly colored and shirts that are slightly distasteful.
I blame tumblr.
How's it hanging... heh

I was thinking the same thing. What's with the recent climb in bullshit news in SH lately? Who cares about someone offended by a shirt?
It is okay, though. Freedom of expression doesn't care about your perception of morality.
Yeah but by that definition of freedom of expression, people are free to express their opinions on the shirt.

I know that, I wasn't arguing that she didn't have the right to say that. I was arguing that she said "this is not okay", when it is.
I like that T-Shirt. I mean yeah it's kinda edgy but I dunno

Not at all, but last time I checked black people were frequently lynched as recently as fifty years ago.
But no, the people who think a noose is a racist symbol are the intolerant ones here because they're the ones thinking of a series of events so recent that they or their living relatives experienced it, instead of the millions of slaves of varying nationalities that suffered across thousands of years of human history.

there's "standing up for oppressed groups" and then there's "going out of your way to try and justify why someone might think something is oppressive, even when it literally isn't in any way". you're doing the wrong one

Cotton t-shirts are racist too because slaves picked cotton

So is drawing the M16 racist because so many arabs or asians were killed with it?
this shirt being racist would have never crossed my mind
I'm a fan of letting dumb/offensive shirts exist though, people are literally advertising why I should avoid them
Apparently you can still get hung in Washington and New Hampshire as a form of capital punishment. And the most recent hanging as a form of capital punishment was in 1996. Didn't know it was still used.
I am struggling to figure how can this offend anybody in particular
I thought it might be a play on the word "loose"? as in morally/sexually loose people? loose... loser? goose?
the fact it might be racist just didn't cross my mind whatsoever
I am willing to bet somebody got hanged in the USA before the first black slaves arrived to the continent at all. Hell, I don't know how these interactions went, but I wouldn't be surprised if whites haven't been hanging each other for quite a while before they have encountered Africans at all.

"Hang loose" is a surfing term.
The most affected people are Saddam Hussein's immediate family, poor people, it's only been 12 years and his tomb's been smashed recently too.
Really poor taste.
