The FCC has voted to begin undoing the net neutrality rules that were put in place just two years ago.
In a 2-to-1 decision, the commission voted to open debate on what are essentially two things: first, a proposal to reverse the Title II designation used to enforce tough net neutrality rules on internet providers; and second, the question of whether the FCC ought to impose any kind of net neutrality rules at all.
Today’s vote doesn’t immediately undo the 2015 Open Internet Order. Instead, it kicks off a public commenting period that will last for several months during which companies, interest groups, and advocates can file their thoughts with the FCC.
When the comment period closes, likely later this year, the commission will then put forward a finalized proposal, theoretically taking into account those comments, and vote to put that into the rulebooks.
At this point in time, it’s hard to envision the commission not overturning Title II by the end of this proceeding. Two of the three people leading the FCC right now were opposed to that classification in the first place, which means the votes are there to make it happen.
...
The commission’s lone Democrat, commissioner Mignon Clyburn, strongly disagreed that the FCC should lighten its oversight, saying that going through with this proposal “would deeply damage the ability of the FCC to be a champion of consumers and competition in the 21st century.”
Since taking over the agency, Pai has put an emphasis on expanding broadband access to areas of the US that still don’t have any providers. His hope is that by deregulating internet providers and removing restrictions on business models, like the creation of fast and slow lanes, ISPs will have more incentive to build out their networks and reach new customers.
Clyburn strongly disagreed with that that line of thinking. This proposal, she said, “contains a hollow theory of trickle-down internet economics, suggesting that if we just remove enough regulations from your broadband provider, they will automatically improve your service, pass along discounts from those speculative savings, deploy more infrastructure with haste, and treat edge providers fairly.”

It could possibly do the opposite. If in the debate it appears the bet neutrality or keeping internet connections under title II becomes prudent to keeping ecommerce going, it might cement it in law.

Trump could also be the best president the United States has ever had, and solve world hunger.

I see your point, but at this time, you've only got one choice, make it clear that the reversal of the current status is bad.

Calling them pieces of shit is pretty insulting to raw sewage you know.

What do you think people have been trying to do? These shit stains don't give a tenth of a fuck. Just like the Republicans did with Obamacare and all that SOPA/PIPA rubbish they'll just keep trying over and over and over and over until people get worn out and give up.

Just cause something could happen doesn't open it up to the possibility of actually happening
It's just good for business, says increasingly nervous GOP for the nth time
Some people just want to see everything burn in the name of bloating their wallets

You're right. Give up. Don't bother anymore.
(Are you guys reading my comments as if I'm trying to justify even opening up the debate?)
Everyone, remember to tell Pai to go FCC himself once the comments open, and let the FCC know that you think abolishing net neutrality is a bad decision.
For those who haven't watched the video, here's an embed. And for those who dislike John Oliver, you can skip to 15:28, where he explains how the comment process works. Note that the link above (gofccyourself.com is a site that will redirect to the commenting area described, once the comments are enabled).

You missed my point entirely. Your post seems to be implying we should give them a chance or get out and protest. But people have been actively protesting and telling them that this is bullshit since Trump appointed whatever his name is to the FCC. Guy came into office saying he didn't care what people thought of it and that he was going to go through with it.

No. My post is saying you've got no choice but to get out and protest, and if it's loud enough, it might be beneficial. Right now is the biggest threat to NN that has ever existed, so people might be more motivated to actually speak up about it.
I'm not justifying what is going on, nor Pai's position.
I hate everything about this timeline.

You may want to try and reword that first post then. It comes across, at least to me, a lot more ambiguously than you seem to have intended.
Oh boy I can't wait for the Internet to be treated exactly like cable and for ISPs to make websites of competitors load slower then dial up.
It's all about the money money money.
anyone that sells stuff through a digital storefront (including me) is going to get fucked by this
thanks fuckers
i wonder how /pol/ and other people like that react to this
also for a while i was under the optimistic assumption that maybe trump wouldnt be so bad
i was wrong

As I've said before, the reason they call Net Neutrality the "Obamacare of the Internet" is because all it was supposed to do was ensure people have equal access and Republicans want to shit all over it regardless.
Along with ISPs, think of data centers, or routing stations. Imagine if certain services such as those could slow down the speeds to competing providers, making it appear that their services are inferior, therefor you should host with them instead?

/pol/ and t_d are more split on net neutrality than any other issue but for the most part they oppose it and see it as a big (leftist) government takeover of the internet.
One has to hope internet companies like Facebook, Google etc. absolutely kick a fuss and get people in the States angry enough to kill this.

i thought /pol/ was 100% net neutrality
i cant take t_d seriously though
its like a big joke that went on for too long

They pretty much were until daddy don spoke against it.
Not as bad as t_d, but still pretty depressing to see
What gets to me
What really GETS to me
is this Pai of shit has already said he's going through with it, he doesn't care what the public thinks.
What the fuck? How the hell do you get through to someone like that?

Oh my god, I've never seen so much bullshit in one quote. Lol, at&t and """"improving"""" services. It'll never happen with these assholes.
Yes, they obviously fought that hard and ignored public feedback in the interests of heroically fighting for consumer discounts.

I went ahead and called one of the FCC phone numbers that someone posted in the comments. Although, I'm not entirely sure I did right since I dialed it as a complaint (which is probably intended for trivial/specific shit in a local area or something) to an agent.

I knew that, I'm saying whoever believes this is nuts.
