New York will bar registered sex offenders on parole from playing Pokemon Go over concerns that the wildly popular virtual reality game could help sexual predators lure young victims, state officials said on Monday. Governor Andrew Cuomo has directed the New York Department of Corrections and Community Supervision to restrict the state's 3,000 sex offenders on parole from using Pokemon Go and similar games, Cuomo's office said in a statement. To enforce the rule, the state is requesting Pokemon Go developer Niantic, Inc to cross-reference a list of sex offenders provided by the state with its list of players.
Reuters This law is bullshit. Even if those targeted are proven criminals, it's not the state government's place to arbitrarily restrict someone from playing a fucking mobile game. I don't even know they plan on enforcing it, as it's an extraordinary stretch to think that Niantic has individual details on the millions of people that constitute their playerbase (and never mind the drastic invasion of privacy that such a list would entail).
Cuomo seems like a perfect "think of the children" kind of guy
Cuomo seems like a perfect "think of the children" kind of guy
You have no idea
How do you even enforce this
I can understand the point of view that they don't want sex offenders near hotspots of children... .. but come the fuck on, you gonna ban tinder too? facebook, maybe all social networks? c'mon
Can't you be a sex offender by committing crimes that have nothing to do with children?
Can't you be a sex offender by committing crimes that have nothing to do with children?
pissing in public, such as an alleyway, for one
In new york your banned from having any type of online gaming acct if your a sex offender. google Operation: Game Over http://www.ag.ny.gov/press-release/ag-schneidermans-operation-game-over-purges-thousands-sex-offenders-online-video-game
Under New York State law, convicted sex offenders must register all of their e-mail addresses, screen names, and other Internet identifiers with the state, and that information is then made available to certain websites so they can purge potential predators from their online networks. After the Office of Attorney General approached gaming companies to remove registered sex offenders on their networks, the companies agreed to purge the accounts. Operation: Game Over is the first time the law has been applied to online video game systems.

As a result of Operation:Game Over, 3,580 accounts of New York state sex offenders have been purged – or their communication privileges suspended – from the gaming platforms owned by Microsoft, Apple, Blizzard Entertainment, Electronic Arts, Warner Bros. and Disney Interactive Media Group. Sony was unable to provide the number expected to be purged by the date of this press release.
this just adds another to the list. its a stupid law. Especially since you dont have to be a pedo to be a sex offender and how easy it is to have a false claim on you that you can't disprove thus forcing you to be on one of these lists.
How do you even enforce this
well theyve proposed laws forbidding them from owning cellphones, its already illegal to own a computer and probably tablets too so ya...plus sex offenders have to check in like every week
pissing in public, such as an alleyway, for one
Does this mean that 90% of all men who go out on a regular basis are sex offenders because of this? [editline]2nd August 2016[/editline] TIL I'm a sex offender

Wouldn't that mean that I'd be written up as a sex offender in the US?

Most of the time you'll get away with it, it's not common for regular guys to get charged as sex offenders for pissing in an alley.

DAs hand out sex offender registrations like candy for people who want to do a plea deal because people are too stupid to fight it. Public urination - and usually even having your dick out non-sexually - is not enough to force you to register. You need to have the intent to arouse.
well theyve proposed laws forbidding them from owning cellphones, its already illegal to own a computer and probably tablets too so ya...plus sex offenders have to check in like every week
How are they supposed to even survive, lol.

There are some people who get aroused by golden showers.
Fuck the huge invasion of privacy this would cause... Part of registering as a sex offender is literally giving up your privacy, as you're entered into a Department of Justice database, not to mention private databases drawn from the DOJ, such as Family Watchdog, for example... You also have to go door to door wherever you live and inform everyone within a certain radius of your home that you are a registered sex offender. Personally, I think sex offenders shouldn't have any rights besides the very basic ones afforded to us for simply being human. (The right to life, no slavery, no torture, etc.) Hell, a lot of people don't think sex offenders should have even those basic rights and that they should be stripped of them and straight up executed. Even if that were the case, I honestly can't say I'd lose any sleep over child molesters and rapists being condemned to death. However, I do think that sex offenders should be screened and barred from things like this based on their individual crime, not the fact that they are just registered as a sex offender. Like some other people in this thread have pointed out, you can be made to register as a sex offender for something as simple as being caught pissing in an alleyway. There probably isn't a single one of us who hasn't taken a piss outside at least one point in time and, to have to register and literally ruin your entire life for something like that is horseshit, especially considering that some of the websites that list sex offenders only tell you what degree of sex offender they are, not their specific offense or any other details.
Why? How is being a sex offender worse than being a murderer? pro tip: They aren't. And murderers still have the ability to be rehabilitated just as much as sex offenders do.
Yeah Cuomo is a shitty governor. Unfortunately last time we had a chance to vote him out, his opponent was shit too, but at least because of that we got reasonable third party candidates in the debates.
Cuomo seems like a perfect "think of the children" kind of guy
He is the king of bullshit bans and bills that do nothing
Cuomo is literally the curator of my nightmares. [editline]2nd August 2016[/editline] I wanna die.
