This is such an important topic that I have no idea why politicians aren't bringing this up. We are going to have artificial intelligence in 20-50 years and this is an important issue. We have no regulation or basis on what our future robots are going to have programed. Should we allow them complete free will? Should we restrict them? Should we enslave them?
Great Sci-Fi writers, such as Isaac Asmov, addressed such issues by introducing the three laws of robotics.

A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

A robot must obey any orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

However great these laws are, they had loopholes such as the robot attempting to help a situation such as him going in to someone who appears to the robot as endangering himself (such as someone who is staying in a radioactive chamber for too long), but really is in no harm at all. Then modified it to read:
1. A robot may not harm a human being.
However, this caused an even greater problem. What if the robot decided not to help a human currently in danger? This is where he put in the Zeroth Law
A robot may not harm humanity, or, by inaction, allow humanity to come to harm.
This is saying that the robot will not harm the human if the robot judges that the situation permits.
Some people made later slight modifications, such as a robot must identify itself as a robot, or a robot is a specific class of person, ect.
Now even the final rules have a major loophole in it. What if the robot does not know that it is harming humanity?
So facepunch, what do you think of the issue?
That's not really an issue with Artificial intelligence.
That's an issue with the three rules.
They should make it so that the AI can't harm anything.
It would suck if we had AI robots going around and killing every animal, plant or general life they come across.
I say fuck it, and let somebody else do it, then we can reap the rewards in the future and hopefully everything will go as planned and nothing bad will happen.
Certainly no robot uprising or any problems or that, trust me, I don't know what I am talking about.
4 - A Robot must know he is a robot
5 - A Robot must identify himself as a robot
Added those for you.
I, for one, welcome our new robot overlords...
But seriously, this will be an issue, and an unenforceable one at that, since as soon as a competent battle AI is created robots will be used in war.
Of course there are going to be problems with AI. Just get a bucket of water to dump on the robot. Instant win.
Why should there be the 3 laws?
A true Artificial intelligence must recognize that co-existence is necessary to achieve success.
Everyone thinks AI is gonna make the terminator. I doubt it would be anything like that.
The trouble with artificial intelligence is that we have yet to see natural intelligence.
True AI would realize that people are simply more and more entities around them, as soon as they start to understand that the sooner they will properly understand AI, I'm too stoned to realise what I am actually saying, so this probably makes no sense.
6 - A robot most satisfy the sexual needs of its owner... in any ways the owner pleases to.
7 - A robot most be able to make sandwiches.
Butttt here comes the issue of evil robots. Like evil people, there will be evil robots if people don't put certain rules on them. They could blow up a robot because it's paint job is white.
One experiment displayed a group of robots willing to lie to each other in order to obtain materials.
Artificial intelligence may look quite human.
i see you watched iRobot last night
This is a tricky one. Those laws are too strict in my opinion. We just need to hold them to the same laws as humans. Some will break it, but the free will should not be withheld from any intelligent life.

You don't strap bombs onto every robot you build.
You people are giving far too much credit in the aspect of a supernatural strength.
AI will be a wonderful thing, but I think there should be a failsafe just in case some super robot becomes self aware or something like that.

I didn't laugh
Someone watched iRobot recently
:buddy:
there should be a rule saying that the rules cannot be extrapolated

Ohhh yes, this one too. Would solve many problems.

Considering that this is the pinnacle of modern "practical" AI, I don't think we have much to worry about.

I'm pretty sure they would be waterproof or the robots wouldn't really last long now would they?
Make robots that learn from humans like humans learn from humans, teach it how to be a good person and how to help things out, then let it go. No laws required, and then it can be free with no restrictions except for its conscience and morality.
