I guess that wasn't a poisonous snake?
Is it not more likely that the woodpecker is trying to protect it's nest, which the snake most likely entered? Probably ate it's chicks or eggs or whatever, cause I don't know why it'd risk it's life otherwise defending some meaningless hole.
