Twitter, SoundCloud, Spotify, Shopify, and other websites have been inaccessible to many users for most of the morning. The outages are the result of a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack on the DNS provider Dyn, the company confirmed. The outage was first reported on Hacker News.
Dyn and other DNS providers operate as a link between the URLs you type into your browser and the corresponding IP addresses. By attacking Dyn, it’s possible to overwhelm that directory function and cause outages and loading problems across a large swath of the internet.
Other sites experiencing issues include Box, Boston Globe, New York Times, Github, Airbnb, Reddit, Freshbooks, Heroku and Vox Media properties. Users in Europe and Asia may experience fewer problems than those in the U.S. — according to DownDectector’s outage map, the DDoS attack is primarily impacting U.S. users.
This can only mean bad things if all of these sites can get taken down this easily
Russia and Australia haven't been hit. Clearly they world of shitposters has united.
The sites themself aren't down, the DNS server that is linking to these sites are down and that is why people outside the USA can access the sites. Major difference. Well unless you think that the USA is the world I guess.
The wikia network is down too.

Canada hasn't been hit either it seems.
Battlefield servers, some steam games also down
My college's website was down as well do to this.
Twitter is bust in the UK, too. It's not geographically limited it would appear.
This also includes PayPal and Github. I can't access any of these services from Norway with the exception of Spotify.
(I'm using Google DNS - could be why. Google DNS uses dyn.com as a provider)
PayPal is down so I couldn't order pizza, and Twitter is down so I couldn't even complain about it. Github is down too.
At least Reddit works for the time being.
Homeland security and FBI are investigating.

There investigating if this has anything to do with the election. If not they are going to still find the culprit.
Edit: Actblue A democratic donor network (Actually has people like you and me) has also been downed.
EDIT2 Fucking Internet of Things.
Huh, is it why the CSS in Kongregate isn't loading up?
http://www.isitdownrightnow.com/ is down.
At least whoever's doing this seems to have a sense of humor.
I bet it was those pesky russians
I can't even use http://map.norsecorp.com/ to see the map light up.
Well maybe a few more attacks like this might fix the problem of DDoS. Oh wait..
Fuck if this is the type of nighmarish attacks that are going to come more often. This is a serious problem.
All except Spotify are working fine for me.
I work for a NASA/DoD contractor and all of our sites are down, from the public site to our internal webmail services. which is great, because i need to email people and tell them why im not at work atm
I guess the good news is that the documentary crew coming today gets to have ~~drama~~ since they were going to be stuck in the boring front offices originally

Crossposting PSA: OpenDNS (208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220) has a decent cache and still resolves hostnames affected by the Dyn DDoS.
