No one has been to Mars yet, and Elon Musk wants to change that in a big way. The SpaceX CEO says we need to put a million people on the Red Planet to make sure human civilization survives. "I think there is a strong humanitarian argument for making life multi-planetary... in order to safeguard the existence of humanity in the event that something catastrophic were to happen," Musk said in a recent interview with the digital magazine Aeon. Musk's comment sounds ominous but may not be off the mark, given the threats that scientists see in climate change and space rocks.
Source

good fucking luck with that, i sure as fuck wouldn't want to be the test rat for this :v:
[t]http://d1jqu7g1y74ds1.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/orion1_48.jpg[/t] gonna need all 8 million tons of firepower to do it then no seriously, we cannot send a million people in 5-6 manned capsules, we can't even send 5-6 men/women in a 12m wide capsule either, start talking about the vehicle that'll do the long hauling then i'll believe you

They'll be doing it on the MCT. Which they're hashing out engines and designs for right now.
good fucking luck with that, i sure as fuck wouldn't want to be the test rat for this :v:
I'd go in a heartbeat, the ability to not only reach out to new grounds but learn/develop to help civilization back at home is something that I cannot deny.
Elon Musk is a big dreamer. I won't stop him from trying though.
Morimoto Corporation A SpaceX partner.
"Excluding organic growth, if you could take 100 people at a time, you would need 10,000 trips to get to a million people"
Anyway, good luck to them but its going to be near impossible to pull the support needed for something this big. They'll need a 21st century Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand.
I wonder how people would live on Mars if ever The dust is extremely deadly to humans, you'd have to stay in Domes or something even if you changed the atmosphere.
I wonder how people would live on Mars if ever The dust is extremely deadly to humans, you'd have to stay in Domes or something even if you changed the atmosphere.
If science fiction and real life are anything to go by, humans love to colonize hostile enviroments The deadlier and uglier the better
I wonder how people would live on Mars if ever The dust is extremely deadly to humans, you'd have to stay in Domes or something even if you changed the atmosphere.
you mean like some kind of Bio-Dome starring Pauly Shore
If science fiction and real life are anything to go by, humans love to colonize hostile enviroments The deadlier and uglier the better
Oh yeah, living on a death world in Warhammer 40,000 is a vacation.
you mean like some kind of Bio-Dome starring Pauly Shore
More like the Eden Project in Cornwall. Much more realistic and less abhorrent than whatever you just mentioned.
Ok I might've been hesitant on a one way trip with like 5 people, if if he's going for numbers like this sign me up.
If we want to get serious about colonizing systems we need to think of alternative methods to break orbit that isn't as costly per trip. For example the orbital elevator that the Japanese CEO expressed plans for a couple weeks ago is a good candidate.
Oh yeah, living on a death world in Warhammer 40,000 is a vacation.
Never said it was gonna be a vacation, but people will find a way to call even the shittiest hole in the galaxy "home", either out of necesity or just for the heck of doing so.
Shiiieeet didn't know this even existed. This is insane man.
They already have the test stands ready at Stennis AFB for the Raptor engine that it will use. I think rumor has it the engines are currently in initial production at the factory.

Although personally I think that we should start with building the Moonbase before we go all the way to Mars and establish Bowie Station.
huh, first time i've heard of that, still kinda disapointing they're just focusing on pure chemical based rocketry ,guess its what will have to do for now but it would be historic if they were able to launch that from pad 39A
pad 39A might not be big enough for it. The flame trench might not be adequate. I think they're going to use 39A for manned Dragon flights to the ISS.
If science fiction and real life are anything to go by, humans love to colonize hostile enviroments The deadlier and uglier the better
Thinking on it, we're actually remarkable in that regard. Rather than sticking to just the perfectly ideal places on our planet, we as a species has decided that "fuck it this place is really shitty but i can deal with it" and have adapted to live basically anywhere aside from the poles at this point. Then we do space shit, and rather than wait till we find the perfect planet for colonization, we just go "yeah mars seems like it might be legit? whats that? it's really fuckin hot and has only trace amounts of water? yeah whatever" humanity kicks ass
Going back to the Bio-Dome idea, we have this in Arizona, got to visit years ago: http://b2science.org/ For a while, it produced energy, fresh water, and food for its occupants with zero outside influence. The experiment failed when rainforest soil bacteria started producing dangerous amounts of CO2.

Do I receive priority seating and a complimentary in-flight meal as a Tesla owner?
Do I receive priority seating and a complimentary in-flight meal as a Tesla owner?
As an early adopter you get seats made a couple years ago.
I wonder how people would live on Mars if ever The dust is extremely deadly to humans, you'd have to stay in Domes or something even if you changed the atmosphere.
releasing moisture in the atmosphere will tie down dust assuming the atmosphere doesn't just escape into space
