This is great, my GP opens 9-5 Monday to Friday, which is also when I work so getting a suitable appointment is a nightmare

I hate when any sort of function that isn't a part of people's day-to-day lives do this. Doctors, banks, customer support, whatever. Being open while everyone is at work, then closing when people get off is literally carrying on the work of undead Hitler.
Make sure that the GPs get time off though
Believe it or not, I met david cameron today.
He's here in lanzarote and he came by my hotel
He was ridiculously normal!
Maybe he should get them to work slightly less hours mid week and more hours on the weekends as I am sure that's when most of the workforce that's ill will be going.

?
Just make sure the GPs have manageable shifts. Also, I guess this move will mean more employment for medical graduates since if they're going 8 'til 8 they'd definitely need to have multiple shift-groups (first group working from 8 'til 4, second shift going from 12 'til 8), assuming they'd normally work 8 hour shifts at the clinics.
Will we be assigned two GPs then? usually you're assigned one GP and you are sent to them every time, I guess that will change now because they obviously can't be expected to work that long
Also that means in total the GPs will work less, but there will be more of them
What annoys me with my local doctors is that to make an appointment (for that day or a future day) you have to phone between 8am and 8:30am, so when you phone up trying to make an appointment, so is everyone else, so you often end up getting a busy signal until after half 8.
There has to be some evil plot behind this, last I heard his party where discussing dismantling the NHS

my GP has abolished appointment booking altogether in favour of drop in sessions at 9 and 12 monday to friday, so basically you have to either turn up at half 8 or 11, sit around for two hours or so, and hope somebody gets to see you that day

My girlfriends doctors are even stranger, she phoned up the day before to be told that no bookings were available, but (this is in the same conversation mind) if she phoned up on the day there'd be a booking available, which makes no sense really.
oh and good luck getting any sort of decent diagnosis as they try and rush you out the door in under 10 minutes after you go in
This sounds great and all but across the 1000 surgeries how much is £50m going to cover? Aside from that it's a fraction of the 10,000+ GP surgeries in the UK.
Plus:
Reform will also include plans to allow patients to email their doctors with concerns over minor ailments
Is it me or does this sound like it's going to result in cases where people get shafted for appointments and receive zero time with a doctor.
I work in a GP surgery, fuck there goes my weekend :(
I thought the entire NHS was understaffed as it is
The NHS is awesome. I've had horrible gastroenteritis, and I was severely dehydrated last Thursday. Called 111 up at 2am, they got a GP to call me back within 2 hours. They then sent out a taxi and I got free passage to their 24/7 center, where I was looked over by a GP and given tablets and advice.
Glad the UK has NHS. As much flak as it sometimes gets, it's really fucking awesome.
I know everyone goes on about how busy Doctors usually are but I've never even been in a waiting room that's full.
I guess it's a bit different in big cities where they are few and wide spread
50m is a ridiculously low price to pay for this. It will save many people's lifes, who would otherwise have to wait for surgeries or urgent medical aid.

Well, people have a tendency to cancel late or simply not turn up.
How is this even going to work with the amount of cuts made to begin with? Cameron's trying his best to appeal to the working class and maybe everyone's going to see through it. It'll be interesting to see what else he's going to do leading up to the election.

My old GP had 10 appointments each day that could only be booked on that day - for urgent appointments and so forth. Presumably they have a similar system.
this should have been his very first task, then he would have made a good impression instead of fucking up degree students' lives.
My GP thinks they're being sneaky, the clock easily viewable from the waiting room is 5 minutes slow, while the clock in the back of the reception and any phone clocks etc showed the accurate time, even then you're usually half an hour late to your appointment, even in the fucking morning.
My mum works in a GP's surgery. I doubt she will like this news. They're understaffed, already swamped with work, and she's just had to cut her hours slightly as she's exhausted. Half the back of house staff are asking for small hour cuts as well due to exhaustion. If they want to bring this in, they're really going to have to spend a lot of money to make it worth it.

Or hire more so one isnt working 7 days a week
