• Crytek says all their future games will be F2P
Crytek's future output will solely consist of triple-A free-to-play games, Cevat Yerli has revealed. Speaking to VideoGamer.com on the last day of E3, the Crytek CEO lamented the rise of DLC and premium gaming services, which he considers to be "milking customers to death". Warface, Crytek Kiev's multiplayer FPS, will be the company's first foray into the free-to-play sector. But once Crytek has completed its current contracts with traditional boxed products, its studios will only produce F2P titles - supported by its new social gaming platform, GFACE. "As we were developing console games we knew, very clearly, that the future is online and free-to-play," said Yerli. "Right now we are in the transitional phase of our company, transitioning from packaged goods games into an entirely free-to-play experience. "What this entails is that our future, all the new games that we're working on, as well new projects, new platforms and technologies, are designed around free-to-play and online, with the highest quality development." Yerli added that he wants Crytek's games to stand out from the current crop of F2P titles. All future projects will aim for triple-A production standards, with development budgets to match. "As is evident in Warface, our approach is to ensure the best quality, console game quality," he said. "That implies budgets of between $10m to $30m - so no compromise there - but at the price-point of $0 entry. "I think this is a new breed of games that has to happen to change the landscape, and be the most user-friendly business model." In short, Yerli agrees with the view that games are destined to become services, rather than the standalone products of old. However, he's clearly no fan of the premium models adopted by the likes of Activision and EA: "If you look at what kind of games are done in the packaged goods market, with DLCs and premium services and whatnot, it's literally milking the customers to death." Warface is currently live in Russia, and is undergoing a closed beta in China. There's no word yet on when the game might be coming to Europe and the US, but it will be published by Trion Worlds. For more from Cevat Yerli and his vision of Crytek's free-to-play future, keep an eye out for next week's complete interview.
Source
Oh well. At least they have released their engine so other people can take advantage of it.
nooo
I'll continue to enjoy not buying their products then!
Speaking to VideoGamer.com on the last day of E3, the Crytek CEO lamented the rise of DLC and premium gaming services, which he considers to be "milking customers to death".
The F2P model rarely works fairly though, but he IS right about that.
P2W
The F2P model rarely works fairly though, but he IS right about that.
I think it has the potential to do well. It depends on the greed of the people who make it I guess. It also eliminates piracy issues, and people get to play for free - pirates are happy and the corporations are happy, seems like a win-win as long as the model isn't greedy
I'd rather that Crytek chilled out in the F2P market than fucked up with, say, the EA market.
I think Freemium models work well, I mean you can enjoy the full game of TF2 free, or buy a key for £1.99 and upgrade to premium indefinitely. Same with Global Agenda, a one off payment gets you an elite account permanently which is like buying the game, then you can buy non-game breaking stuff like XP and money boosts which double your gains.
just keep cranking up that diarrhea dial
I'm sorry Timesplitters.
supersuit-man blowemup codclone 7 now with in-game cash shop
Speaking to VideoGamer.com on the last day of E3, the Crytek CEO lamented the rise of DLC and premium gaming services, which he considers to be "milking customers to death".
I don't really see what the problem is.
I'm glad they broke their habit of having titles include an I that they could replace with a Y. With Ryse it just got lame. They should totally have called it Wyrface though.
So they stopped making console games? Also aren't free to play games usually very low graphically allow every pc to play it?
If you look at what kind of games are done in the packaged goods market, with DLCs and premium services and whatnot, it's literally milking the customers to death.
Well I agree with this part. Maybe it wont be so bad afterall.
I hope they base their f2p model off what Valve does rather than the pay 2 win games that are everywhere
So they stopped making console games? Also aren't free to play games usually very low graphically allow every pc to play it?
Not necessarily, they can just make their games scale better to different sets of hardware.
I bet EA is mad. Funny because next economics class, we are having some EA guy coming in. Time to ask him if origins will get 75% off deals, and make a big deal when he says no, even though I already know the answer :v:

GFACE just sounds to me like GayFace
The F2P model rarely works fairly though, but he IS right about that.
So instead, we'll just make EVERYTHING paid DLC.
Crysis 3 maximum power $1/use maximum armor $1/use maximum speed $1/use cloaking $2/use campaign $50 advanced graphics options on PC $30 DX11 for PC $20 etc.
EA won't allow it... unless they are making money of it.
I wouldn't mind if they had TimeSplitters f2p. Have some small 2-5 buck challenge packs with respective character unlocks. Fuck, I'd be happy with any word of TimeSplitters. :(
I think crysis 3 counts as "future" game because its not released yet. Or because its about future.
Free to Pay.

RIP Crytek games.
Whenever I hear "free to play", I always think of this guy going "We are free. To. Play."
