Paul Croituru, 37, dug up the trove of 300 forged silver coins worth nearly £120,000 - more than ten times what he earns a year as a council worker. But the father, who found the ancient Greek coins with the help of son Alexandru, 13, immediately told the authorities and will now lose nearly all of the money because of local treasure hunting rules. Despite being forgeries of the 2,350-year-old Tetradrachm currency, experts say each 5mm penny is worth £400. The father and son found 309 whole coins believed to be worth £400 each, as well as 40 fragments of the forged currency, but went straight to the authorities with their haul. They are believed to be the oldest counterfeit coins ever found, and were produced just 400 years after the first ever coins were made. The pair are now likely to receive £12,000 - just 10 per cent of the estimated total value of the forged coins - while the rest goes to the Government.
Source
Too bad the fucking authorities are taking it from him.
well at least they get 12k which is still more than he makes in a year.
Would have expected the whole thing to be worth a lot more than 120,000 to be honest.
wait, they aren't even being made to send them to a museum or something, the government is just collecting 90% of the money? cause that's pretty disappointing
Would have expected the whole thing to be worth a lot more than 120,000 to be honest.
really? cause they are forged
really? cause they are forged
they're also pure silver and potentially the oldest forged coins in history. like seriously that's a big deal.
You guys really think he just handed most of them to the government? If he has any sense he has some saved for a rainy day
-snip-
The Greek government needs all the money it can get
Shame it was in Romania then
The Croiturus found the silver coins in a 25 metres squared area of the Partestii de Sus region of northern Romania, near the site of a long-abandoned medieval village.

You guys really think he just handed most of them to the government? If he has any sense he has some saved for a rainy day
"Hello, do you accept ancient Tetradrachm dollars? What do you mean you don't accept an a thousand year old currency?!"
Too bad the fucking authorities are taking it from him.
That's normal tho? It's part of our cultural heritage, the coins are going into museums [editline]21st August 2014[/editline]
wait, they aren't even being made to send them to a museum or something, the government is just collecting 90% of the money? cause that's pretty disappointing
The government takes all the coins, not 90%. They give the discoverers 10% of the VALUE of the coins. A professional commission of the government will check them, and then distribute them in different museums. All the museums here are administrated by municipalities, thus the state
You guys really think he just handed most of them to the government? If he has any sense he has some saved for a rainy day
It's against the law here to hide artifacts from the authorities, just saying
really? cause they are forged
Makes them worth arguably more than the real deal, since real money of the sort are presumably common, where forged are like "Holy hell, old-ass forged money? Neatest thing since sliced bread!"
But the father, who found the ancient Greek coins with the help of son Alexandru, 13, immediately told the authorities and will now lose nearly all of the money because of local treasure hunting rules.
What bunch of pricks.
Assuming he's a smart man, he probably found 600 coins.
What bunch of pricks.
What the fuck are you morons bitching about? If everyone kept the artifacts they randomly found, the museums would be almost empty. What, you're telling me in Sweden or whatever the state doesn't force you to hand in artifacts?
its not that, its the idea that the govt can take such a large amt of the money earned from it
They received enough, 12k pounds/15k euros is a lot of money here
I don't understand how the authorities can take it. I assume the two of them found it together without the help of anyone else and took them home. Just don't tell anyone and go to some other country to sell them to some collectors or something. Or how does this work
prolly illegal to go to another country and sell them, treasure found on the land of any govt technically belongs to that government
And how will they know where they were found? It says greek coins, yet it was found in Romania. Could be from greece as well or any other country. Just don't tell where they were found and sell it to some people who collects these sort of things.
So that's a tetradrachm, eh? Reminds me of that Dwemer plate thingy that dropped off of Dwarven Spheres in Skyrim, similar shape with the circle and notch. I wonder what the notch was used for?
he will use his fortune to 'buy a new metal detector'.
:suicide:
:suicide:
And well he should; His current one can only find fake and counterfeit shit.
but is it enough to move out, or is it just enough to settle for mediocrity not trying to be an asshole but i dont hear good things from people living in romania, mostly tales of wanting to leave
What the fuck mediocrity? I'd say to go fuck yourself but you're american, so being ignorant is something normal in there. So he got would've gotten a shitload of money to move out, enough money to buy a lot more shit in here than he could outside the country. And he'd want to move out with the money? You're stupid. There's such a thing as border police, they check such things. Themoreyouknow.jpg
jeeze you dont need to be a fucking asshole about it
Here's a good advice when dealing with countries in the Balkans/countries near to the Balkans. Only we are allowed to talk shit of our countries, if a foreigner does it we become defensive. That's how it is.
jeeze you dont need to be a fucking asshole about it
Don't worry about it. The only pastime in that shitty country full of gypsies and terrible people is to talk shit online and defend his country -- the mosquito of the European Union. Romania has a beautiful landscape and awesome historical sites. It's a shame so many of its citizens are uneducated retards. The roads are in disrepair, there's regular outbreaks of liver flukes in anywhere that's not Bucharest, stray dogs will rip you apart, terrible people, the largest gypsy population in Europe... I can go on and on, but I'd rather not. Btw, Romanian guy. I'm a foreigner talking shit about your country because it's shit. Fuck Romania and your horse drawn carriages. Why can't you modernize like the rest of the modern world? [editline]21st August 2014[/editline] Fuck Slovenia too. (User was banned for this post ("Chill out" - UberMensch))
The amount of xenophobia in this thread about counterfeit money is staggering.
How's hating a country xenophobia? I'm not afraid of other cultures. The Balkans just suck.
