The Berkeley High Black Student Union tweeted out a screenshot of the messages, which read, "KKK Forever Public Lynching December 9th 2015" and "I hung a n----- by his neck in my backyard," among other racist taunts. The Black Student Union decried the messages, calling it a "blatant act of terrorism."

"We are working hard to create a positive and inclusive school culture and we recognize the deep pain and rage that hate crimes such as this one bring to our students of color, as well as the damaging effects on our entire community," the letter from Pasarow said. "Even as we continue our investigation we recognize the need to address the harm that this has caused, and to that end we will be spending time planning as a staff about how to support and care for our students."
Who the fuck does a walk out to protest something that nobody in power actually did Do these people even understand what a protest is? This sounds like a stupid excuse to get out of class.
My colleges black union started a protest because someone jokingly posted blackface on a schoolwide snapchat account. I swear black student orgs at schools get worked up over stupid shit.
say what you will about the actual reaction, but I am glad they were peaceful. the police were happy with the "peaceful and happy protest" when there are 700 kids in protest, a lot could have gone wrong.
Why the fuck does a highschool have a black student union? American highschools have such abysmal campus life I can't imagine it would have any activities in it. Nobody actually gave a shit. Just an excuse to get out of class.
definitely an excuse to get out of class [editline]5th November 2015[/editline] i assure you all of those kids that left listen to music that says a very colorful array of words constantly
it probably some kid being stupid and thinking this would be a funny "prank" that kid would just need a detention/suspension and there you go. I feel that mass protests (even if they were peaceful, bravo to that) is a inflated reaction. Unless the person who did it was a teacher/staff or there is more at play here then what i read int he article
The Black Student Union decried the messages, calling it a "blatant act of terrorism."

"We recognize the deep pain and rage that hate crimes such as this one bring
This is neither terrorism or a hate crime. Someone's being a racist asshole for sure. But the reaction seems a bit hyperbolic.
High schoolers have unions?
Well this is dumb... if it were a racist teacher maybe but this is basically protesting a comment.
reading the full article, it seems to me like they had a valid reason to protest but either their message was misconstrued, or they chose to focus their protest on the existence of the threat, instead of what sounds like an attributable and long-running issue:
The statement went on to say that in the past, similar acts against black students have been ignored.
which appears to also be underreported by NBC itself. The message was a threat of public lynching displayed on a library computer. This is about as permanent and as publicly visible as a piece of printer paper posted on the wall next to a garbage can. And the permanence of the message is important, because if it was 10 feet of graffiti on an outside wall in the quad, that demonstrates a more serious intent, if we assume that a spraypainter would be willing to risk being caught easier and being punished more to send their message. Just like a flyer can be thrown out, this computer message, however it was displayed, could have been closed, deleted, erased, etc. I would like to know more about past threats that have been ignored or mishandled by the school. This seems to be the heart of the issue, not just the appearance of racist writing. Anyone can very easily type a message and leave it on a screen with almost no risk of being identified from it, and anyone can very easily remove that message. NBC Bay Area is most likely sensationalizing by talking mostly about the spread of the screenshot and hardly at all about what the protesters had to say against the way the school's administration has handled past events. [editline]Edited:[/editline] it looks like someone edited the clientside HTML of the library homepage to display the message, which is, as i said, easily erased (you just close the tab, it doesn't change it forever nor for any other computers or servers).
Haha holy shit this article is huge, they really want people to eat this up. A dumb freshmen forgot to delete his bad joke off a public computer so almost 1000 people protest.

It's a school with a history of not taking action on issues like these, and it's blatantly racist. It can easily be considered a threat, considering it states "public lynching december 9th."
Probably because one was a student representative at a university trying to make a public statement and one is a random comment on a high school computer.
Ignoring the point that DChapsfield brought up - that the protesters stated that the school had refused to take action in other similar cases. It seems like the peak of a buildup of administrative inaction, not just "a random comment."

Also, the parts of FP disgusted by her statements didn't want her arrested
Pussies.
Man, will this stuff ever stop? Every day there's a thread about some bullshit like this
So can the white students have a white student union or is that racist
Jesus Christ FP reactions are so hilariously two faced...

This is Berkeley. Remember that. They would walk out if carrots were served instead of corn at lunch edit
Yeah, Berkeley High School. Do you actually know about this random high school's history of protesting, or did you just not read the article at all and rush in to make a funny post?
Little of A, little of B. Its crazy that they would find a need to walk out over an isolated event on a single computer. If they were to walk out over this, they would probably walk out over carrots and corn too.
So can the white students have a white student union or is that racist
Was thinking that recently. At my college there was some student organization in the union with a "Black Power" sign and I thought about how much outrage there would be if someone had a "White Power" sign.

Just a thought
So can the white students have a white student union or is that racist
There's a student group like that at some school in Maryland that was pretty controversial. They call themselves a neighborhood watch group, and people say that they racially profile people but since they're not going out and arresting anyone there's nothing illegal about it. They might just like, see a black dude in a hoodie and go "hmm I think he's a criminal" and then report it to the police or whatever. [editline]5th November 2015[/editline] yeah here it is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Student_Union I don't really think there's anything to be said for a white student union simply because I don't feel any connection to other white people simply for being white. I don't feel any combined or shared struggle for being white. Every problem I have to deal with is a product of my own life rather than the color of my skin. Also starting a white student Union to show off a double standard is more than likely a thousand orders of magnitude more trouble than it's worth
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Student_Union
And of course they get branded a hate group despite "We do not hate any other race and we do not wish anyone harm".
