But saying "couldn't care less" is the maximum amount of how little one can actually care, which is none. Saying you "could care less" implies that you don't currently care for something in the least that you possibly can meaning that your not down to the amount of caring that "couldn't care less" implies.

You could still care less, so you do care? If you couldn't care less, then your care is zero, since you can't care negative. If you could care less, that means your care is at least one, which means you care a little bit.
