• Euthanasia - Should it be allowed?

For those of you who do not know, euthanasia is basically the practice of ending a life, but with the intentions of relieving it of pain and suffering. Examples of this in the real world would be: http://www.euthanasia.cc/cases.html What are your opinions on euthanasia? Should it be allowed? What is considered 'suffering' and who can determine what is and what is not? Personally, I believe that, under the right circumstances, euthanasia should be allowed. This meaning, if you are in a state deemed 'suffering' by: A Doctor, A family member of the person, and the person themselves. If the person is in a state where they cannot make that decision, then the doctor and the family member should be able to decide. Here are some examples of situations where I think it would be okay: A elderly man is in a nursing home. He cannot, and will not ever be able to live by himself again. He is confined to his room and has to have people clean him, and help him in and out of bed. He decides that he would like to be euthanized. He, his family, and a doctor all agree that the situation seems fit, and, after a process, he is given medicine that lets him die peacefully. A teenage boy is terminally ill, and is suffering greatly. His condition is worsening every day. He is not in a mental state where he can decide his fate. His doctor and family agree that it would be best to end his pain. After the legal process that would be required, he is put to death and relieved of his suffering. Examples where it would NOT be fit in my opinion: A person is extremely depressed. He decides that he wants to die. He goes to his doctor and asks to be euthanized. It is done then and there. No process. Quick death. A girl is very ill, and is in a lot of pain, however, the doctors strongly believe that she will fully recover, even though it will take a while. She wants to be euthanized, however her doctors and family disagree. At her request, despite the strong believe that she will survive, she is euthanized. Opinions?
Basically what you said. If a person is extremely ill and has a second to no chance of recovery, said person or the nearest family should be allowed to make the decision to end their suffering. There is zero point in keeping them alive while their condition is getting worse by the day. If however there is a chance of them making it through their treatment, I do not believe they should be given the option. If someone is ill but is told that they have a 50/50 chance of surviving, I think they should be kept alive and given treatment, until they get to the point where they have no chance of survival, assuming that's the case. People who are depressed should never be given the chance.

I meant, even if they are suffering now, but all the doctors think he/she will survive, then the option should not be given since it is very likely that the person would recover according to the doctors. As for depressed people, no, you shouldn't just let them come in and basically commit fully legal suicide, with the blood on someone else's hands. They have a right to it, I think, just not that way.
Basically, I think that if a person is terminally ill, and diagnosed as such. Then yes, they should be able to kill themselves. Same goes for any illness which causes immense pain. Such as cluster headaches.
I'm for it in some cases, against it in others. For the elderly and terminally ill, Im all for choosing when you're done. Only problem I see is its kinda hard to choose who's allowed and whos denied euthanasia. Tricky situation.

I rarely post in Mass Debate but I'm all for Euthanasia As long as the following is put into place, then I see no problem with it: 1. The patient is terminally ill/has only a few months to live/suffers from a medical condition that has totally crippled their way of life 2. Clear consent is given to the doctor and patient through the use of witnesses (such as family members or close friends, this way a clear relationship and consent was witnessed and therefore no forcible consent was given) 3. The operation is quick, humane and the patient can peacefully die alongside their family members or close friends if they wish too. The doctor must make sure all procedures are followed out strictly and the patient does not suffer in the process. I may be missing some points but honestly that's the way I see Euthanasia in a fitting manner, it's all about dying with dignity alongside those who matter the most to you.
Frankly I don't see any reason why anyone should be prohibited from taking their own lives. It doesn't matter if they're terminally ill or not, as long as options and a system for improving their mental health exist, I just don't see an argument.
My life I should be able to decide if I want to end it fuck "procedures". Obviously if it is just for depression there should be some mental review and waiting time.
Someone else being able to decide your fate? No thanks.
Pretty sure I'd be fine with dying if I was crippled in a bed with no cognitive or physical reaction to stimuli whatsoever due to irreversible brain damage Even being a quadriplegic would pretty much ruin my will to live. What do you do for the rest of your life when you can't even move

The key word is voluntary.
You don't exactly have a choice if you are practically brain dead. I don't see any reason why someone who is brain dead would want to continue living.
Euthanasia should definitely be allowed. Unless someone wants to be euthanized for no good reason then it should a viable option.
I think it should be allowed to end people who are suffering. We do it commonly on animals, why not human? Tons of people has cancer or other disease and they are kept alive, sometime against their own will. I think it would be a moral thing to do.
Bringing this back to life since it never got a real debate going back when it was in mass debate. Is that okay?
