(AP) -- The City Council of a tiny north Florida town known as one of the nation's worst speed traps has voted to disband its small police force.
Residents living in and around the town complained about 70mph speed limit that suddenly becomes a 40 to 35 limit for only a hundred feet then going back to 70 with a speed trap at that lower limit. SideNote: Most likely the city will be putting the budget towards county or state police to patrol and take over like other small US Cities/Towns
I recently got a speeding ticket going through this area. 63 in a 35 (28mph over). I didn't notice the speed limit signs instantly dropped to 35 while the speed limit was 65. Fuck Waldo.
Theres a few stupid areas like that near my area. where it's 45Mph, suddenly 30. then 45 again, and then 20, etc etc. of course police all along that road
I wonder where this town is, do people have a hard time finding it?
Where's Waldo? [editline]2nd October 2014[/editline]
I wonder where this town is, do people have a hard time finding it?
aw.

oh ya fuck this town god bless waldo citizens for doing this
And why couldn't they just vote to change that?
Because in America things like speed limits could never change by public choice, however we can throw out the entire government.
Because in America things like speed limits could never change by public choice, however we can throw out the entire government.
Minnesota has something to say about that. Speedtraps are still a thing, but we ruled those goddamned cameras unconstitutional a while back. Small steps, at a minimum. Waldo's real alternative is just to build a private road bypassing the section entirely, which would cost an ass-load of money, would be a hilarious snub.
wheres waldo
Where's Waldo [sp]'s police force[/sp]
Now thats some straight up bullshit police tactics
Theres a few stupid areas like that near my area. where it's 45Mph, suddenly 30. then 45 again, and then 20, etc etc. of course police all along that road
Let me guess... They bust your nuts if you enter an area speeding a bit over the limit because the limit has wild changes 3 different times?
And why couldn't they just vote to change that?
I'd bet the speed trap funded the police force. The town was probably told they needed it to provide a police budget, so decided to not only remove the speed trap, but disband the force as well.
Because in America things like speed limits could never change by public choice, however we can throw out the entire government.
What does that even mean? Why would they be able to disband the police, but not remove a speed trap by choice?
And why couldn't they just vote to change that?
because in the article it states that pretty much everything about the police force was fubar and that it'd be too costly to actually correct them all. So i guess the general idea was to no longer spend the costs on a corrupt small town police force for a tiny town and turn it over to the state.
They usually change the speed limit like that because you enter a residential area, in Maryland the speed limit is based on the surrounding area. A two lane road in a residential area would have a speed limit of 30 while a two lane in a rural area would be 45. Its not about them doing it because they can its about trying to make it safe for people who live along that road. [editline]2nd October 2014[/editline] Speed limits also might be decided on by state law, so a small town wouldn't have power over changing the speed limit.
Awesome. I'm impressed with that town for willingly voting away half their operating revenue.
And why couldn't they just vote to change that?
probably and this is just my guess, it sounds like its a state-route that passes through a town, and thats where things get murky because the state officials don't often like to work with local officials [editline]2nd October 2014[/editline]
What does that even mean? Why would they be able to disband the police, but not remove a speed trap by choice?
speed limits are administered by state and county agencies not local towns
Theres a few stupid areas like that near my area. where it's 45Mph, suddenly 30. then 45 again, and then 20, etc etc. of course police all along that road
why does this exist
Where I live there is a downhill road that then becomes a very steep uphill and weaker cars struggle to get up the hill. Despite the road being perfectly safe to drive on quickly (it used to be a 60mph road), they recently made it a 30mph zone and stuck a speed trap at the bottom to catch all the people who don't brake all the way down the hill. Worst part is when you're behind a really small underpowered car and it barely makes it to the top of the second hill. It's evil, really. Exists only to get money off people.
That whole area is plagued by these types of towns there is Waldo,Lawtey,Keystone Heights, all of those little towns that people take to avoid Orlando traffic when traveling to south Florida.
why does this exist
There is usually a reason, like you're driving through a small township, or there are hidden driveways or just more residences.
why does this exist
As other people said, it's a speed trap designed to get income to the town, I've actually been to Waldo on my trip to Florida this year and the place could be barely called a commune. Two streets, three blocks and all, PD probably doesn't have a choice in order to cover their salary.
There's an irony in the fact that unexpected speed changes are quite dangerous, and in this case are being caused by something designed to lower road accident fatalities.
why does this exist
the one near me does that because the residents were bitching about people going 40 near their homes. It's stupid but eh, you can just avoid it or slow down instead of trying to throw out the whole police force.
I wonder where this town is, do people have a hard time finding it?
It's small, but no. One of the main highways here have signs directing you to it. I always took this state road through Waldo when traffic was shitty. It looked like a really safe town and I'm pretty sure I drove by the station there and there was like 3 cop cars parked.
i recall there was some former soviet country or something that had so many problems with its police force that they disbanded it entirely, and crime dropped to near 0 almost instantly because most of the crimes were actually carried out by the police themselves
