This is gonna be just like the Congo; all the educated natives will leave and when the Afghans have to run their own country again their government will be dominated by the corrupt and incompetent.
I don't understand why anyone has rated the OP dumb. This is awesome news - those interpreters have put their neck on the line to assist us and it is only right we do our best to help them in return by giving them visas.

Coming over here... interpreting our Afghans...
Sounds better than the people who go here and don't respect our culture and starts with all the 'gangsta' shit. One of my classmates were beaten up by 13 immigrants yesterday. Can't people celebrate last school day in peace man. [editline]22nd May 2013[/editline] or the ones who don't bother learning the language even after 15 years.
No, no no no. We don't need any more immigrants in the uk.
No, no no no. We don't need any more immigrants in the uk.
I would rather have these lads than some shitheads from the slums
No, no no no. We don't need any more immigrants in the uk.
Really? They risked their lives fighting for the UK and you say they don't deserve this?
Really? They risked their lives fighting for the UK and you say they don't deserve this?
even i, known to be a little racist when it comes to who should live where thinks that those that does a duty for a country should be given the right to live in the country
Really? They risked their lives fighting for the UK and you say they don't deserve this?
Our country is full, there's no land, no houses, no jobs and a few hundred afghans moving here with only the skills of communication as interpreters? We don't need anymore immigrants let alone unskilled ones. I am pretty sure they were paid for their duties, i am sure that is enough.
or the ones who don't bother learning the language even after 15 years.
Danish is hard. Ridiculously hard. Instead of bitching, it helps to actually sit down and help try and teach some of the poor guys the language. I've taught one Afghan and one Kurd Danish from just working with them. Really cool and interesting people to talk to, too. It's also fun as hell to teach someone your language, gets you thinking about words and expressions yourself. For example, what does "Det var så lidt" really mean?

I can understand them.

And some of them actually volounteer to HELP you. Id say you owe them. And bringing them and their families out of the warzone to a peaceful nation where they have better chances to become affluent. Is the least you can do. [editline]22nd May 2013[/editline] Also yeah, alot of immigrants are shitheads. But as the latest town versus town football struggle unfolded around me, it made me realize once again, So are alot of the natives.

They will almost certainly be hunted by the Taliban for helping us and killed. Being paid means sod all when you could be set upon at any moment by some men with guns. They have helped us, and consequently they have no life left for them in Afghanistan as a result. We owe it to them to offer them a new life here.

If we don't get these people out now they are probably going to be hunted down and killed by the Taliban as collaborators over the next few years. We need to take care of our allies or our word and our protection is worthless. Who would want to help a nation that will leave them for dead the minute they stop being useful? Seriously, the UK can handle 600 immigrants who have risked their lives for us for the past 12 years. 600 immigrants who speak Pashto AND English. Maybe you should try and look past your incredibly callous views for a moment to see why these people need to leave Afghanistan, and why we owe them a debt of gratitude. [editline]22nd May 2013[/editline] I mean fuck, I know Conservative views are as necessary to society as brakes on a car, but how thick do you have to be and how much empathy do you have to lack to think blanket denying all of these people is a good idea? Half of those that applied were already turned away; we're only accepting the people who are really at risk of being murdered.
It means it was nothing.
Except it doesn't work in most every context where you'd say "It's nothing". It's a very contextualized phrase, which turned friggin' hilarious when I started by just explaining it as "It's nothing", and he started using it like that. "Hey Riller, kom her" "Hvad er der?" "Det var så lidt" "..."
No, no no no. We don't need any more immigrants in the uk.
Yeah England might sink beneath the waves if too many of those dirty foreigners show up
I'm okay with these ones coming in as generally speaking they will be in favour of the countries they served on the front. As long as it doesn't open the bloody gates for every Afghan who feels as if they "helped" the UK or Denmark in Afghanistan.

shit jobs are still jobs.

"Det var så lidt" "..."
I'd translate "Det var så lidt" (literally "That was so little") to "You're welcome". It can be used in any of the same sentences, but doesn't quite mean the same. It's basically a way of saying "Oh, don't worry about it, it didn't take much effort from me anyway". I'm having just as hard a time helping my girlfriend with Danish (she's British). When she comes home from Danish class and goes on and on about "What does 'slår til' mean?" (literally "hit to", meaning "When somebody decided to act right there and then"). Danish is difficult, but not impossible. The main problem that she's noticed is that we Danes have a very bad habbit of switching over to English as soon as we talk to someone that doesn't speak perfect Danish, which is the completely wrong way of dealing with stuff.

You do realise that translators are highly skilled and always in demand right? Not to mention, who gives a shit about that they risked their lives (and the lives of their families) to assist the UK. Its the least they deserve.
Anyone who serves someone else's country through military deserves citizenship. It's a shame that the UK still haven't given some Gurkhas visas yet.
