• Tony Abbott's glorious piss-up at the pub following leadership spill
The former Prime Minister reportedly went straight to the pub with his loyal staffers after losing the Liberal leadership to Malcolm Turnbull, celebrating his freedom with a wild night of partying. According to the Sunday Telegraph, Mr Abbott even danced with his shirt off, although one witness said it was a short-lived manoeuvrer, that “it came off, but it was back on pretty quickly”. A marble coffee table in the PM’s suite was apparently smashed during the wild night and staffers even took souvenir shards. A fellow partygoer, Assistant Minister for Infrastructure Jamie Briggs, appeared the next morning in a wheelchair, although he insists he was injured during a morning jog.
http://www.news.com.au/national/politics/tony-abbott-indulged-in-wild-night-of-partying-after-leadership-spill/story-fns0jze1-1227535262146?utm_content=SocialFlow&utm_campaign=EditorialSF&utm_source=News.com.au&utm_medium=Facebook There's also a great video in the article

As was one of his staffers calling Malcolm Turnbull a cunt shortly after Turnbull's designation as PM.

He is an asshole but this is fairly normal by Australian standards.
He is an asshole but this is fairly normal by Australian standards.
Going to a pub and drinking is considered being an asshole? What.
holy shit that guy is every bit of an asshole as he sounded thatd be like if an outgoing US president got shitfaced, stole all the silverware and booze before getting on marine 1
Eh, it's more like if the outgoing US president went out and shot a shitload of guns at a gun range before going out and exploding some things with a "borrowed" M1 Abrams.

Any normal person breaking a marble table is gonna face at least a fine. Bullshit
holy shit that guy is every bit of an asshole as he sounded thatd be like if an outgoing US president got shitfaced, stole all the silverware and booze before getting on marine 1
Pfft every PM throws a massive party after leaving. They sound pretty wild.
Pfft every PM throws a massive party after leaving. They sound pretty wild.
something being a tradition doesn't make it any better or any more reasonable to not critique it
something being a tradition doesn't make it any better or any more reasonable to not critique it
What is their even to critique? He lost his job and it was an incredibly stressful day, so he took his employees and friends to the pub to wind down. And at the end of the day, Abbott (like every other member of parliament) is simply a member of parliament representing a constituency of about 100,000 people. He wasn't an elected head of government or state, nor was he appointed by one. Politicians aren't treated as a whole other class of society here in Australia.
Eh, it's more like if the outgoing US president went out and shot a shitload of guns at a gun range before going out and exploding some things with a "borrowed" M1 Abrams.
i would do this

I'll leave the blatant, obvious hypocrisy there and let you take it from there
The table was at his Canberra suite, not the pub. What kind of pub has coffee tables?
Plenty? There's some pubs around here with couches and coffee tables. Is that like really rare? There's a lot of those here
Probably ate some raw onions after
Plenty? There's some pubs around here with couches and coffee tables. Is that like really rare? TLDR of the people that have actually given their opinion in this thread so far. Australians: "Yeah, fair enough mate". Everyone else: "What a disgrace".
You ignored the point that nothing at the pub was broken. And if anything was broken, you would expect a member of parliament responsible to organise its repair.
Yeup Money gets you out of legal issues a normal person deals with Thank you for agreeing with me
Australians: "Yeah, fair enough mate".
Bugger that. He was a shameful dickhead representing this country, and he's an even more shameful dickhead representing himself.
Yeup Money gets you out of legal issues a normal person deals with Thank you for agreeing with me
A normal person would also have to pay to repair broken property? What are going at?
Yeup Money gets you out of legal issues a normal person deals with Thank you for agreeing with me
Nothing at the pub was broken!
Bugger that. I think he's a cunt too but getting drink after a large change is a normal way to celebrate for some people. If we start caring about status too much we will stop being Australian, god forbid we might even stop our self depreciating sense of humor. He did a lot of actual damage but ignoring the governmental side, him representing our country probably didn't do a lot of harm in terms of our reputation, at least not in the long run, it gave us all something to laugh about, especially when talking to foreigners. I think that's a quality that the world needs more of, being able to laugh at yourself and then moving forward. Otherwise you get stuck in political debates over trivial things and never get any actual work done. If I had one positive thing to say about Australians, I would have to say it's how efficient we are at filtering out non issues.
