Play the Demo, then head to Kickstarter and support the re-imagined version of the seminal sci-fi thriller.
A little over two decades ago, a first person action/RPG dared to blend diverse gameplay elements with narrative-driven 3D exploration in a sci-fi horror setting. System Shock soon became a timeless classic, its haunting charm still resonating with thousands of people to this day. Now, Night Dive Studios wants to bring it back as a new, faithfully re-imagined game and you can help them fulfil that promise by supporting their Kickstarter campaign.
System Shock is a complete remake of the genre-defining classic from 1994, rebuilt from the ground up with the Unity Engine and coming day one to GOG.com. The best part? You don't have to believe the enthusiastic rumours circulating around cyberspace, you can try out a Demo of this ambitious effort right now and see for yourself! "We want to demonstrate our commitment and passion for System Shock by providing a fun and exciting experience to potential backers", said Night Dive. "This demo represents the look and feel that we want to achieve with the final version we'll deliver to you, our backers. Please be aware, this is a proof of concept; the performance, features, and visuals are subject to change."
Grab the Demo and enter the derelict halls of Citadel Station crawling with the horrors unleashed by SHODAN, the maniacal A.I. with her own plans for the future of humanity. If this is a future you want to live in, make sure to head over to the System Shock Kickstarter page and help make it a reality.
Don't even try to resist her, SHE IS IN CONTROL.
So far here's the news from GOG. This also confirms to be at GOG as well.
Its super good and really impressive so far for a pre-alpha, atmosphere is thick and the sound design is incredible
I hope they can do the game justice. System Shock and Sys Shock 2 were infinitely superior to the Bioshock franchise, imo

Definitely, far and away. I enjoyed the Bioshock series, but they always disappointed me too, for not being anywhere near as good as System Shock was. (And that wasn't simply a case of nostalgia goggles, I've replayed SS1 and 2 especially several times over the years, including after all Bioshocks were out)
Pretty good demo.
literally no graphics settings at all for the demo, only resolution changing
literally no graphics settings at all for the demo, only resolution changing
Reminds me of Bloodstained's recent demo- I'm not surprised, settings cost money/time, things they probably want to save up right about now.
The demo was fun up until I crashed, but it did feel like System Shock. Playing it myself instead of watching Polygon definitely made me feel more confident in it. I will admit the demo does still feel pretty alpha though.
I'm skeptical on the stretch goals though...
Enemy limb dismemberment, More puzzles, Ammo types/weapon settings, Vending machines, Basic crafting/research, RPG leveling with perks/skills, Weapon upgrading, Hardcore mode (No respawning), Ironman mode (Only 1 savegame. If you die, the save is deleted)
I do not care for a lot of this, the only things I like are Hardcore/Ironman mode (which sound like exactly the same thing so this needs clarification. Does Hardcore mode eliminate cyborg conversion chambers but you can reload your save? What's going on here?) The vending machines, research, rpg, and crafting were not elements of SS1, and I liked it that way. "Character progress" such as it was, was finding the better equipment, not some arbitrary damage and accuracy boost. They're claiming faithfulness to the original, but these elements would be contrary to that. The inventory system is already borrowing from SS2. I don't have any say in what they decide to do, but I would be disappointed if they decided to break faith and add these elements. If they want to reboot SS2, they should go reboot SS2, not remake the original in the image of its successor.
That's my two cents anyway. I like the demo, and I accept them taking small liberties, but I'm afraid of them actually changing the game. Black Mesa got it right, they reimagined Half Life without compromising the actual gameplay.
Is the original worth playing, and are the stories connected between the sequels ? I got SS2 on GOG when they gave it away for free few weeks ago, but I'm not sure should I play the first one first.

So what's the difference between the firing modes?
So what's the difference between the firing modes?
Low / Med / High / Overload — the damage increases fairly linearly but the heat and power usage increases a lot faster. Overload packs a hell of a whallop but is the least efficient in power usage and overheats the weapon.
Make sure you don't change your FOV to lowest to do some testing. It removes the APPLY button along with CANCEL, so you're not even able to change it even after restarting. :v:
Edit: Reinstalling doesn't help either.
I liked it overall. But I wasn't a fan of the inconsistent art-style. Having some things look crisp with high-res textures and having others with highly pixellated textures reminiscent of the original doesn't gel well together.

Every single texture is "pixelated" (no texture filtering, old school style)
Glad they're keeping up the reference game. I couldn't find the code for the door so I just put in 451 and sure enough.
*Sigh* Crashed shooting a zombie in the face...
What key let's you use items like the batteries? There's an explosives button for grenades, but I don't think the battery is a grenade... And are the soda cans useable, because I can't use them from the menu or equip them to a slot, and I know in SS2 you could definitely eat food for some health.

You can't use most items yet.

Thanks man!
Killed that scorpion thing right beneath a ladder, then when I wanted to climb down, I got stuck there and couldn't move. Restarted the game and it crashed while fighting that zombie worker. Was interesting while it lasted, definitely something I would like to play one day.
Runs like shit, 30-45 FPS to render a single empty room, I got more on the Doom demo in outside areas while under attack. I also have mixed feelings about the pixelated textures; you have fancy lighting, high quality particle effects and high poly world objects, and I don't think that mixes well will pixelated textures, it just looks like you are playing on "low" texture settings, while everything else is on "high".
Hopefully the ladders are less stiff and slow I just lobbed myself off all of them instead.
That said the demo was impressive, good feel of the spooks with awesome attention to detail and that view of Saturn was pretty fucking awesome!
the ladders are shit
Some reason it went to my left most screen, sort of annoying, then when I fixed that, it wouldn't stop spinning.

You're going to hate yourself, it's written in blood about two inches to the left of the door.

Fun fact: it was originally hidden behind the desk, but we put it RIGHT NEXT to the keypad to make sure Polygon wouldn't miss it.
It's blowing our minds that some people are somehow still missing it when it's right under their noses. :v:

System Shock 2 has one of the best FPS Soundtracks of all time.

I missed it too, I was literally looking right at it when I first saw the key pad, then spent five minutes wandering around until I came back and noticed it. It kinda just blends into the wall I guess.
Genuinely impressed, backed it right as I finished the demo.

SS2 was the better game. Borrowing features from the superior sequel to remaster the original seems like a valid notion.
Backed it as soon as I saw that Chris Avellone was involved.
